Hi,

I'm doing my own rustproofing this year. I had a hit and run last year with the Aveo and they had to cut the pannel on the driver's door to replace it. I was so disapointed when I saw the results of the rustproofing I had done profesionally that I decided I would do it myself from now on.

So I'm looking for a cheap way to spray the stuff in body pannels and cavities. So far I thought about using a garden sprayer. Anyone knows where they are usually the cheapest? Any other ideas on what I could use to effectively and cheaply spray?

Whats the undercoating material? Something thick like bed liner or something thin like POR15?

Of all the undercoating materials I have seen in my few (30) years working on this stuff.
I don't believe I have ever seen one that reduces thin enough to be put out through a garden sprayer.
Most of them require a dedicated spray system simply because of the viscosity of the product as it is sprayed.
The ones that come out thin like paint have chemicals in them that promote foaming and froth and look really nasty as they go on, not to mention that they also tend to splatter more.
The ones that go on smoother are also thicker as they exit the sprayer.
Buy a HVLP gun and get the correct spray nozzle for the material you wish to use.

Maybe I did not express myself properly. I won't be spraying thick undercoating. I'll be spraying Fluid Film, which is a mix of lanolin and oils and have the viscosity of latex paint.

I once had an old sprayer that was meant to operate on the pressure of a vacuum cleaner (on the exhaust). But I broke the glass jar before I got to try it.

Anyway, I'd like to know good DIY rust treating solutions myself. In the past I've usually just used aerosol asphalt spray on the floor area, and squirted used oil into the crevices, plus doors/rockers/quarter panels, hood & deck lids with a normal oil container/squirter.

The problem with a sprayer is you really need a hoist or a pit to be able to use it properly underneath the car.
