Standardize EV mpg reporting request
1 Attachment(s)
I can't make sense out of the EVs when I sort the garage by mpg. Suggest adopting a standard mpg to kwh conversion factor and updating the gas log add/edit screen thusly (svoboy, please delete "test" vehicle):

some other factors to consider...
Since I just posted an EV the other day, and was shocked it immediately shot to no. 2 on the list, I should reply here.
There is a standard conversion between kWh and gallons of gas. It's just standard conversion factors between kWh and BTU, and 125000 BTU per gallon of gas. What can drive differences is where you measure the energy usage of an EV. I measured mine as the amount coming from the wall, and included a compensation for charger efficiency. Some others measure it battery-to-wheels. To generate an apples-to-apples comparison, the website should recommend a standard for where to take the measurement (I recommend from the wall). In any case, I do think EV's should have their own types of log entries, so we don't have to "fool" the calculator in the gas log by putting in an equivalent amount of gasoline. We should have a spot to input kWh and a route length directly. Then the website should list the vehicle with an "EV" tag so you know it's electric, and "kWh/mile" and "equivalent MPG". |
Disregard this request, need to accommodate plugins, etc.
