Suggestion: Fuel Log Import
 

Could the ability to import fuel log data easily be added to the garage? I find it easier to track my mileage using Fuelly, but I would still like to be able to contribute to the statistics here without having to enter all the information twice. I know I've also read of others who keep track of their mileage using a spreadsheet, so the ability to import could vastly expand the garage's database.

Unfortunately, it's not quick 'n' easy. And I'm not sure a lot of people would use it, to be honest.

We don't have the time or desire to compete with Fuelly. They offer a decent service - I don't have a problem with people using it.

That said...

It would be great if you some fuel stats on EcoModder, then one EASY way to do it if you don't want to enter every tank manually would be to put in a cumulative monthly / yearly total.

EG: one tank, of say 5000 miles, and 100 gallons. = 50 mpg current average. Presto!

Then, the question becomes - why even bother with EM.com's fuel logs? I track my fuel consumption with a spreadsheet that I update every other month or so, then I import that set into Fuelly as one CSV file. It take about 1/2 an hour to update my spreadsheet, then another minute to update Fuelly's logs. This is possible because my spreadsheet has a section within each of my vehicles' worksheets, that can be quickly be pasted into a real text editor, changed to replace the tab characters with commas, then directly saved as Fuelly-friendly CSV files. After that, it takes about another 45 minutes to update the fuel logs in EM.com.

The suggestion to mitigate this, by only entering 1 entry per quarter/year/whatever, kind of misses the point of having a fuel log at all. It makes that much easier to turn the fuel economy rating for each user into some sort of easily gameable contest, instead of providing a serious way to track fuel usage by the members here.

Timly topic, I was looking for a way to do a batch import today. Had to just lump most of my fuels into a total miles and total gallons. My fault for not keeping up on them and not wanting to do 46 data points individually.

I was afraid it would be difficult. Adding multiple tanks as one seems like an idea that will work for me. The averages will still work out the same, and anyone who wants to look at my tank-by-tank mileage (which isn't very accurate in a Gen2 Prius anyway) can check Fuelly.
