SuperMID shows accessory loads on engine
One nice thing about the SuperMID is that it displays the injector pulse width so you can instantly see the effect of various loads on engine fuel consumption. About 5 years ago I published a thread showing the effect of various loads on the injector pulse width for my car when it had a 16 valve non-lean burn engine installed in it.
Here are the figures with the lean burn engine. SuperMID readings in uSec Baseline Idle (600 rpm) on warm engine 1.9 Revving engine to 1000 rpm with no load 1.4 Revving to 2000 rpm " " " 1.7 Revving to 3000 rpm " " " 1.9 (Lean burn kicks in to reduce pulse width above idle) Idle + parking lights 2.0 Idle + low beams 2.1 Idle + high beams 2.2 When driving at 60mph, I lose 1 to 2 mpg when driving with the low beams on, so at 60 mph I'm losing about 1 mpg for each 0.15 increase in injector pulse width. Idle + Engine cooling fan 2.1 Idle + Cabin cooling fan on 1 2.0 Idle + cabin cooling fan on 2 2.0 Idle + cabin cooling fan on 3 2.1 Idle + cabin cooling fan on 4 2.2 Idle + a/c + cooling fan on 1 3.8 Idle + a/c + cooling fan on 4 4.0 |
This is good info. Just a few questions...
1) What's a uSec? Is that a milli second? 2) Is this with engine up to temp.? 3) I tried searching, but couldn't tell what the difference was between a SuperMID and an MPGuino. Any idea? |
A μSec is a microsecond.
It looks like MetroMpg came up with the idea for the MPGuino, so it is obviously better! I think that the SuperMID has more features, but I am not sure what you would need to do to get your own, while I think the MPGuino is overly complicated. Just order one from a fine gentleman in Estonia. Find a nice box Hack your car Profit! I looked into the SuperMID when Basjoos mentioned it before. Yoshi, the guy that makes it, is reclusive, overwhelmingly busy, or something. There do not seem to be very many units in existence, so information is scarce. |
Isn't 'usec' microseconds? (Milliseconds should be represented by 'ms')

Although MPGuino, SuperMID and UTComp are more accurate, any OBD gauge can also supply you with this info (and some factory computers too). Just set your gauge to watch LPH/GPH, and turn things on/ off.
