SURPRISE - You are a Canadian!
I somehow just found out that Canadian citizenship laws changed December 15, 2025. Citizenship is no longer restricted to one generation for those born before that date.
You are already a Canadian citizen by operation of law if:
- You were born outside Canada before December 15, 2025, and
- You have a direct Canadian parent, grandparent, or earlier ancestor, and
- That ancestor was a Canadian citizen (by birth or naturalization)
People that want to claim Canadian citizenship need to fill out some forms and provide proof of lineage to a Canadian. No generation limit applies for people born before this date.
I started my paperwork last week.

Will you renounce your current citizenship or hyphenate?
Expatriated or moving to the Western Provinces?

It would be an additional passport not a replacement.
To early to say if we would live in Canada or not. A Canadian passport does open up more opportunities in other commonwealth countries as well. As far as I can tell there are no downsides to holding a Canadian passport as long as I don't live in Canada. Still lots of research to do on plus and minus.
I do know that there are some downsides for US Roth 401K accounts.
Also my wife has no ties to Canada so that complicates things. I would have to sponsor her and then we would have to both live in Canada for 1095 days out of the 5 years after she got residency. With 4 elderly parents I don't know if that is realistic.
Also Canadian healthcare is super complicated and based on the providence one lives in. There are residency requirements within the providence to maintain coverage.

The reason I mention the Western Provinces is that I remember the 1960s in Oregon when the saying was that you don't need to move to California, California is coming to you. Do you remember paper ballots at a polling station?
Now you don't need to move, half of Canada is joining the Union.

I thought you just had to self-declare as an indigenist communist and they'd make you POTUS or Prime Minister, or whatever they call someone less important than governor of California.

In 2017, my sister moved to Oregon, but wasn't weird enough, and scurried back to this desert wasteland.
In 2025, she applied for dual citizenship, but apparently, she wasn't weird enough for them, either.
Dad was born in Canada and had dual citizenship.

SE Oregon is the instate antipode.
Do you have a Camry you could micro-dose with Boric Acid? It would do wonders for Logic's peace of mind.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that calling the Prophet Muhammad a pedophile is not protected by freedom of speech, as it goes beyond permissible criticism and constitutes an abusive attack designed to denigrate Islam and provoke religious intolerance.
Muslim scholars argue that the accusation is historically and medically flawed, noting that Aisha reached puberty before the marriage was consummated
A eunuch has more balls than the EU and Canada combined, and I'd sooner be one of the former than the latter.

I have friends and family in Ukraine, Russia and other parts of Europe who have been viciously persecuted and tortured by the government. I'm not saying that the EU is the greatest thing on Earth, but they have done a lot in stopping the persecution and protecting citizens and forcing governments to pay for damages.
Personally, I'd take being told I can't talk about some ancient religious leader over being beaten, raped and electrocuted.
