Tdi 1.9 Skoda Octavia! Gunning for the Panzerwagon-52.54mpg US tank in:) 09/16/15

1 Attachment(s)
After some time searching, I've finally managed to track down a non PD Tdi Octavia..

Spotted it on Gumtree for a low price (and haggled my customary 20% off).

185k miles, 2 previous owners, partial s/h and MOT til Dec 15.

It could do with a hoover and some new discs and pads, but all in all I'm most pleased!

Full gory tale and pics of it here..

This evening a mini valeting took place..

I've already been admonished on twitter due to a lack of "bucket shot";)

What do we think?

Poor garage vacuum got hammered for 30 mins or so, and then the old wipes came out for super speedy swipery..

The pile of wipes is what came off the drivers door/dash steering wheel/ centre console.

The engine bay can wait for another day!

Following

320touring 06-03-2015 09:13 PM

Now that it is almost fit to sit in, I'll run it up to the unit for a stripdown and look..

Key elements for checking:

Condition of brakes (known fault present)
Condition of Dampers
Condition of other suspension componants
Condition of tyres

Condition of bodywork
Condition of underside
brake lines
fuel lines

Condition of fuel filter
engine oil condition
coolant conditon
fuelpump seals
air filter
pollen filter
Cambelt inspection.

Based on the outcome of that little perusal I'll see if she's worth the spending on.

If work is to go ahead, it'll likely be brakes first, followed by a full service.
Is the cambelt relatively simple on these?

320touring 06-04-2015 03:14 PM

Took 5 mins to solve the riddle of the braking issue..

And got some bonus e30 action in too:)

Got a wheen of parts due soon for this so it should be on the road by the weekend.

Also used the 335i as a veg hauler to get 100L home ready for the octy to drink

Having had a look at the 65mods page, I'm thinking the following:

Initial checks:
Brakes checked for dragging.
Wheel bearings checked for play.
Check of engine bay for any boost/air leaks
Check of underside panels to see that they are present and secure.

Simple mods:
Full service and shift to 5w40 fully synth Oil.
Replace fuel filter.
Clean out EGR system.
Clean out inlet manifold.
Tyres to 44psi.
Upper front Grille block.
Bulbs to LED/low consumption versions.
Create COLD AIR intake.

Moderate Mods:
Undertray front.
Undertray mid.
Undertray rear.
Heated Fuel Filter(For running VEG).
Insulate block and engine bay for faster warmup.
Turn wheeltrims into moondiskesque covers.
Lowering on new dampers and springs.
Moderate weight reduction where possible.

Should be enough to be getting on with the now..

320touring 06-10-2015 04:17 PM

Having been oot furra swatch, and it looks like the boot sticker suggests it has an ALH lump-is that a good , bad or indifferent thing?

UFO 06-10-2015 04:36 PM

Make sure to disable the EGR before running on vegetable oil. Nothing clogs an intake faster than vegetable oil polymers.

fearone 06-10-2015 04:38 PM

What ratio of veg are you using? Or are you making bio?

Not making bio, will be starting off with a 25% blend (and new filter) then will ramp up to 50%, 75% and possibly as high as 85-90% in the summer.

I will likely try to get some sortnof heating setup to get the filter warmed

320touring 06-11-2015 03:43 AM

First run from cold to the station. 10 mins in town traffic at 8am..

Even if it is 10%optimistic, its still nigh on 42mpg from cold with 100l of veg and 50kg of tools in the boot

Circa 55-60mph. Not doing any p&g currently, just dfco on sliproads/approaches to roundabouts and junctions.

Been doing some tinkering on this tub today..

Got the interior cleaned, and the brakes sorted. Marevellous! (not to mention the MPG on the way hame)

Passed 100miles on this tank today- figures look fairly decent. Got some good runs about the place-70%motorway, 30% town

Tomorrow may kill them though, as it is a cold start hop to the station..

So finally made it to fuel light on in this for the first time..

672.1 miles, on 45.66L of fuel! that is 66.9MPG (imperial) or 55.7MPG US

1081.6km travelled before refuelling- nice to get a kilo tank on the first run. Also made #6 in the top 10 Diesel cars in the garage.

I refilled it with 15L of WVO (at 50p/Litre ($0.78/L)
and 30.66L of Derv (at 116.7p/L $1.82/L)
Total refuel cost was £43.28($67.40)
giving a cost per mile of 6.4p($0.10/mile)

In a change from all the "economy" shenanigans, I took this Drag Racing today up in sunny Fife..

awesome:)

It never missed a beat!will write a full report on the old blog later, but have a teaser pic..

320touring 07-19-2015 04:43 PM

Another tank into this beastie 585.2 miles covered- 58.79mpg.

the drop from 66odds was likely down to all the drag racing and a bit more town work.

the refil consisted of 30L of veg, and 15L of derv. total cost was a most pleasing £32.49.

gives a cost per mile of 5.6p

320touring 08-03-2015 09:20 AM

Just been up drag racing in this again yesterday- after doing a retune to it.

bhp up from 90 a fair bit, torque up from 166ftlb to 225ftlb. It looks to be on course for another circa 60mpg tank- even with the drag racing and remap..

end result is running 16.8s on track rather than 18s:)

the mapping was done via the obd2 port and was simple enough to manage when I'd learned the basics.

you can alter the values in a variety of ways..

Freeware software is available online that allows you to alter the values that map the following criteria:

Driver's Wish (this controls the max fueling at given throttle pedal input %)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/ZfmgOTPb.png

Boost Target (Maps the requested boost level from the turbo for a given RPM/Fuel volume)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/edA4k0Yk.png

Smoke Limiter (Controls volume of fuel based on air volume and RPM)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/k1EOfcZb.png

Torque Limiter (Sets fuel volume limits based on RPM)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/Q1mFw8tM.png

In essence then, I have the ability to raise /lower fueling levels and boost levels on a fairly granular basis.

The output is available via the "View performance" function:

kafer65 08-03-2015 11:44 AM

The software is free online now? That's a great tool! The torque improvement is wonderful and it appears to be spooling up very early too. No worn out vacuum lines, stuck VNT veins or oxidized grounds in the engine bay it seems. Does that engine have the intake manifold shutters/flaps? My 2004 Jetta did. It always worried me that they might let go and get ingested into the engine. I see the antifreeze reservoir has the sensor where its above the fluid line so no worries about antifreeze in the wiring harness. Couple of the other things to check is the seal that keeps moisture from freezing the emergency brake in winter and the adjustable yoke that keeps the back brakes equally engaged or slacked. In a few months the glow plugs may need attention for cold starting. I would inspect the fans, fan control module and alternator nut as well. I could be mixing up problems from different years and models but I've seen many these issues in our cars here. Oh and lift pumps and transaxle boots are two other things I just thought of to inspect. You've probably thought of these things. Hope something here is helpful to you.

320touring 08-03-2015 05:30 PM

Had a go at remapping this last week, via the OBD2 port.

Software is available that lets you alter the various maps making up the ECU programming.
The numbers in the boxes at the top show the maximum fuelling permissible at the given rpm/other criteria.

Suffice to say, It went from 18.009 for the 1/4 mile to 16.832- a decent improvement.

Yeah I had a quick glance over all the n75 valves and boost/vaccuum pipes before mapping. all seemed in order.

I'll need to get it on the rolling road to see what it makes.

next up is maybe to have a fiddle and see what an economy map looks like..

thanks for the hints and tips re what to look for-will peruse in due course!

320touring 08-09-2015 05:16 PM

Time for another fuelling today-

602.3 miles on 47L (using a 44L WVO, 3L Derv mix). This tank included 17x 14 mile runs at Crail, after I'd remapped it.

Very pleased with that 58.3mpg (48.55mpg US), and a total fuel cost of £22.33 ($34.61)- giving me a cost of 3.7pmile ($0.057mile)

http://thumbsnap.com/s/cW1KDMCF.jpg

On the run home I took it very easy- and had this as the shown average (based on the computer being 10% optimistic, I reckon a genuine 80mpg (66.61mpg US) over 17 miles.)

http://thumbsnap.com/s/e5gQU7Ih.jpg

320touring 08-12-2015 08:13 PM

I've been focusing in the wrong area on this car for a wee while- time to get back to basics!

I bought this car primarily for its economy- so time to look at maximising the MPG.

The first goal will be to get back into the top 10 Diesel cars- to do this I need to get past the Panzerwagon owned by Runningstrong. His fuel log is testament to his hard work in getting to the 53.88US mpg achieved so far.

For me to get near him, I'll need to see a6% increase in my mpg- no sime task.

Currently the car is remapped for HP/torque, but done in such a way that low loads mean that it performs almost like stock.

For this tank I intend to see how well I can do on the current map whilst commuting to work. The route is 24 miles each way, of which 3 miles are town driving, 4 are A road and 17 are Motorway (the m80 near Glasgow).

I commute at peak times, and have encountered some tailbacks on every journey.

Here's a look at what I've achieved so far- looking at my initial and latest runs.

Monday Morning- 62.28mpg (51.86 US) actual (allowing for 10%over read on obc)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/2IpIkJm2.jpg

Monday evening-58.14mpg (48.41US)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/fJqAnOh6.jpg

AVERAGE= 60.21mpg (50.14US)

Wednesday Morning- 64.17mpg (53.43US)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/AgM1nhAj.jpg

Wednesday Evening- 63.27mpg (52.68US)
http://thumbsnap.com/s/UoXMFMy0.jpg

AVERAGE= 63.72mpg (53.06US)

Heading in the right direction at least:)

Nicely done.

You got me motivated to start tuning the ecu on my tdi.

I had a 1.9 Octavia estate with 110 hp for a year. For me the average consumption was 51.5 mpg. Best tank I ever got was 62.9 mpg.

YES! VEGGIE oil WILL create a wall, no air flow eventually:(

1. KONI with new lower springs, the best for good driving without being way harsh(Bilsteins blew out on me)
2. LARGER turbo, better torque curve/better city driving(less shifting)

BTW, your MPG is good :-)

I'll be removing the egr as soon as I get a blanking plate and work out how to map out the egr so the eml does not come on.

cheers re Koni-will look into it.

Looking at possibly a pd130 or pd150 turbo if I can find one cheap

YES! That would be good for the breathing, BOTH the EGR removal and larger turbo !
Go to fred'stdi.com and check out the vendor section, there are a couple of turbo/parts vendors there :D One being X-man...
(european BTW...)

KONI's have adjustment. 3 spots--soft, medium(where mine are adjusted) and firm(more like track days). Although release of tension is necessary for adjustment, I really need the availability of such...

Good luck!
PS. Cover your Skoda rust spots with rust/salt neutralizer; body, etc will last longer :-)

Looked at the Konis- 4 of them would be 2x the cost of the car, whereas 4 Billies will be 75% of car cost.

thanks for tips re turbos- need to get a good looka t the car to make sure its worth spending the money on.

also need to decide if I'm doing the timing belt

TIMING BELT ? That is a HAVE TO...
Unless the previous owners are your family and YOU took the car to mechanic, DO THE TIMING BELT ! Otherwise the cost of the R & R would be 5-6 the value of your car, just for the engine + labor :(

PS. I have the KONI and they ARE worth the extra money. Would someone around you have a VW with KONI's ? See if you can drive or be in it, you'll feel the difference :-)

at the cost of the car (£200/$310) its a case of cambelt roulette to be honest. If it dies before I fit it, no great loss.

that said, should it appear solid at the weekend I may spend out a bit on it for prventative maintenance..

320touring 08-15-2015 02:17 PM

Took the Octavia to head to my mother's birthday shindig yesterday.

Approaching a queue of traffic on the m74, the brakes felt odd.

300 yards later on the sliproad and I had no footbrake to speak of.

mildly troublesome.

I ditched it with a few profanities and went about my business.

Today I managed to get a look- and it looks like a rear wheel cylinder has failed comprehensively.

luckily a local parts emporium had replacements in stock- so I purchased 2 and some brake fluid.

I'll replace both I think as it was not a pleasant experience
