Turtle Introducing my Land Rover.

Hello, I have just become the owner of a 42 year old Land Rover IIA. I would like to use it on a regular basis for camping trips and also in the winter.
Its very old school and from England, 2.25 liter Diesel (61hp / 104ft lbs), four speed with a Fairey overdrive with a four wheel drive transfer case, no power steering or brakes plus its right hand drive.
I have always wanted a Diesel and I am hoping to make it efficent as possible. My eldest son who is a mechanic in the Army has already given me some great tips for the Engine.
Its has locking hubs on the front axle so it is 2WD most of the time. It only has 30,000 miles on it and I am hoping to have it on the road very soon, I am just waiting for insurance info now.

Hello retired limey - looks like you figured out how to post. (I was just going to send you a reply.)

42 years and 30k miles is quite something - was it a farm vehicle?

There are a few Land Rovers on the forum - not an easy platform to get fantastic economy, but it never hurts to try your best.

Welcome to the forum.

PS - I have relatives who live in your neck of the woods - NOTL - very nice part of the province.

The 'modern' Land Rovers I don't care much for, but the older ones (like the IIA) are awesome! Welcome and congrats on becoming owner of a classic 4x4!

Welcome to ecomodder.

Well, while a Landy isn't the most economical of vehicles, at least it's old enough to run on veggie oil or biodiesel.

(But check other's experiences with these alternative fuels before you jump in.)

Thanks to all who have replied. Its on the road now and I am already getting a lot of comments. I am using a GPS as a speedo as I need a new speedo cable, so once I get that I will start tracking mileage. Tires went to 60 psi but I think 50 psi will be the way to go.
Only problem is cabin gets very warm from the engine, I need to insulate transmission tunnel, floors and fire wall.

Thanks to all for their posts, first to Ralph from Luton, sorry its a Land Rover not a Range Rover. Those are too high end for me and I like old school stuff. I like the fact there is no computer or electronics, the Landy only has two glass fuses to run the whole thing.
Secondly to Sliverinsight2, yes the body is made of Ally. After WWII there was lots of Ally around but not much steel, so Steel frames with Ally body panels.
Now I have been giving it some decent runs it seems to be smoking less and running better, also it gets a lot of attention when on the road.
My wife just purchased a 1990 mint Mazda Miata (red) with 73,000 km on it to supplement her 2003 Cooper S. I have three oil changes to do this morning.
Have a good weekend to all.

Welcome

Your vehicle may not get much in high numbers, but by percent, you could really pull some good numbers!

And older is better for modding, except for the price of replacing original components. I look forward hearing more about your adventure/s!

How do they keep these 2 apart on the Landy ?

You can't have them touch each other, or the aluminium will oxidize over time.
