Thanks for reporting spam, guys and ladies!

Sadly, there's no good way to get rid of human spammers, but reporting posts is the best way to tackle them. Whenever you report a post an email goes out to all the mods, and one of us should be online and able to tackle it.

Thanks a bunch for helping to keep the forum quality high.

NP, Svoboy. I figure it is just a way we can help you guys out a little and keep the spam out of here.

P.S. you going to the Ohio/PA meet?

SVOboy 09-02-2008 08:01 PM

I'd go, but it's at a bad time for me (and 8 hours each way or so). I'd like to have a philly meet up some day though...

At another forum, I'm having some fun killing off spammers.

In the reason for banning field: I pasted a Viagra ad - spam the spammers. :p

It took me a while to figure this out since I've seen two to report so: To report press http://ecomodder.com/forum/images/em...ons/report.gif bottom left

Actually, I thought that the http://ecomodder.com/forum/images/em...ons/report.gif button was for voting "I liked this post" ;)
Just kidding. A group effort on this is much better than leaving it to the mods. Just helping out...
BTW, is it possible to block IP's from which spam was sent? I mean, can the mods see that this post was sent from IP xxx.yy.zz.11 and block it so that that IP cannot post anymore, or even register as a new user?

The webadmin can block an IP or range of IPs. Of course, you don't want to block the IPs for spammer sites AND good members. Still, some IP's stick out.

95.anything is very likely spam (I don't recommend that broad a block)

What I do on the site I help moderate is look at newbies with suspicious names, Google that nickname in only the last 24-hours....often a spammer that joined 1-2 dozen of sites during the day, planning to strike at 2am. I look at IPs, their registration email and the profile. If there are 3 or more comical discrepancies, I pre-ban.

For example, if they say they are from NYC, time-zone is Singapore, IP is from Russia - they are about to spam. If the profile is "Currency: 123456" - "Biography: Man" - it's a spammer.

What is incredible to me is some spammers will lurk a week after they have been banned....either it's a computer or a complete idiot.

First batateam a few days ago, and jackdia888 today, are spammers that registered half a year ago, slept until now, and suddenly started spamming. I wonder if it's the same guy (IP)?

Not the same IP, but the same strategy. I guess it's logical that they could be planting "user account seeds". When they get advertising that fits our demographic(?!?!?) the zombie account is woken and posts the spam.
