Ford Fiesta 1.0L triple to get cylinder deactivation

Ford just unveiled the next generation Fiesta this week in Germany, and it will apparently have the first implementation of cylinder deactivation in the 3-cyl model:

Ford has developed a cylinder deactivation system for the tiny three-cylinder, making it the first time the fuel-saving tech has been applied to a three-pot. Under very light loads, one of the cylinders can be deactivated, then called back into action within 14 milliseconds, according to Ford.

No details on fuel economy gains, or whether it will be offered in North America.
The new Fiesta is supposed to arrive as a 2018 model.

FYI, the current 1.0L turbo Fiesta with manual transmission is EPA rated at:
- City: 31 mpg US
- Hwy: 41 mpg
- Combined: 35 mpg
If you look at the 2014-2016 Fiesta triples on Fuelly, it looks like owners are reporting around 37 mpg US.

Sure, now they all jump on the fuel efficiency band-wagon. Makes ecomodding seem redundant when you could just go out and buy something that gets much better fuel mileage than you'll ever achieve on your own.

Cylinder deactivation on a 3 cylinder? Thats cool but seems odd. I wonder how they deal with balancing and NVH...

Except people aren't really buying the Fiesta 1.0's in North America in any significant amount, if going by the number of owners for 2015/2016 on Fuelly is any indication! |

I also don't think the Fiesta 1.0L are plentiful in any regard. Trying to find one is not easy even if you did want to buy one.

I wonder how Ford managed the vibration -- the 2014 Mirages were paint shakers! Particularly the CVT model in gear when stopped. (They improved it for 2015 and then further for 2017.)
Assuming deactivation only happens when in motion, it shouldn't be too bad. (Says the guy with an 18 year-old Firefly 1.0.)

Even trying to find a stick was an adventure. When we purchased mywifes Fiesta I told the sales person I would be interested in seeing a 1L. Months later I got an email stating they had located one I could go look at, in Orlando. Orlando, a 4 hour road trip, needless to say it didn't happen.
