Pretty good list, but I think we all know that a manual in the right hands will return better mileage than an auto.

Good article/video.

Still can't beat my DSG tranny :p it's impossible to shift that fast !

Nice to see him busting the dirty air filter myth. I wasn't expecting that one! That one gets trotted out all the time as gospel.

Regarding the auto vs. manual question: I think his argument stands when the car is in the hands of a typical driver. There aren't many manuals driving around any more, but the ones I do notice typically sound like they're being driven around constantly in 2nd gear in the city.

Hypermilers are anything but typical :turtle:

I say give me a manual any day, although a dsg wouldn't be a bad choice either. Most automatics computers are programmed for power & efficiency. However if I choose my 5 speed can be dedicated to strictly economy IMO.

It is certainly easier to adjust the nut behind the wheels than a vehicle's computer.

That would make them atypical!

Typical response

I thought I could out do the DSG and shifted it for a while.
Other than occasionally shifting out of 6th around 45MPH on a hill, it gets better mileage than me.
I think the reason is it doesn't get tired or distracted and miss a shift point.

Too bad nowadays the manuals are getting geared basically to fit into the EPA test procedure instead of providing an all-around efficiency :turtle:

My auto obviously hasn't seen the program...
