Toyota Aygo

Hi All,

I have been browsing the forums for a while now and have not posted anything.

Anyway i have recently bought a little Toyota Aygo. now this is already an excellent car for fuel economy (@ 62mpg from a little 1l 3cylinder engine). but i would like to explore the possibilities of increasing the mpg further.

Now unfortunatley i have not got any pics to hand of my Aygo but there are plenty on the net if you have not seen one before.

Now what mods would you, the ecomodder community, suggest i could so to the car to help increase its mpg?

Many thanks in advance.

Jon

Welcome to ecomodder!

How far are you willing to go? I would start with our gas mileage increasing tips list.

I am winning to go quite far to a certain extent but i would like to keep the look of the car similar to as what it is now. e.g. not go as far as the aro civic.

I would suggest instrumentation, wheel covers, and skirts for starters. :)

Welcome to EM! What SVOBoy said. Here's a picture of the Aygo for other members to see :

Do you have a 2-door or 4-door? Manual or Automatic?

As a fellow UKer(about 35miles away!!!!! Warrington) carefull you don't get the rozzers on you for modding too much and clear it with your insurer, otherwise they may refuse to pay out :( . Stuff like tape grill blocks should be ok - prob is the Aygo is pretty cool as it is.

You probably ought to consider a Kammback, too. The shape of your car lends itself quite well to one.

Actually, the Aygo (and its twin sisters, Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1) don't have a hatch in the back that would lift with the kammy. Instead, they only have a rear window that hinges up. Maybe the kammback could be attached to that?

Thanks for your help guys. I do like the suggestions that have been made as i have already looked into this when i removed the front bumper a couple of weeks ago.

At first i was planning to remove \ block the two front grills next to the logo on the front. This is avtually where the air intake is located (behind the left one) but i will attach a cold air feed and place it in the lower grill where the radiator gets its air.

The lower grill is already partially blocked on the left hand side but the honeycomb pattern i'm sure is not helping with the air flow so i'm going to smooth over this and help guide the air towards the radiator.

I think i will tackle these first and see how they go as i'll be constructing them out of fibreglass so could take a little while to get right.

I was also thinking about smoothing down the front bumper bits on the corners. Would this help?

I am a renouned expert in ms paint (ha ha) so i have digitally modified the aygo.

Does this look like a good start or not?

How about guiding the air away from the rad? The radiator and its grill are a partial air trap, so directing more air onto it may increase drag. Directing air to the side or top should be better. Also, you could probably cover the other end of the grill, diverting that air to the other side. How much? You'll find out by trial and error. Cover maybe the whole right half with cardboard and drive around with that. If you notice that the temperature is too high and the fan keeps turning on, then shorten the block by 10cm. Mid-summer is the best time for adjusting grill block size.

I just fitted a Kammback to my Aygo, on my drive home from work today I managed to get a new economy record of 81.5mpg (Imp) before my best was 78mpg (Imp)

I've also got an upper grill block where air is directed over the engine and around where the intake is (the grill block increases Intake air temp and stops fresh cool air getting in, on a long drive the intake temp can get upto 40*C)

As far as the intake temp. Ive noticed that between 30c and 40c the engine runs nice. And also i would do an airdam. The kamm looks good too

Tried blocking everything on mine (search for George) and it made naff all difference apart from a slightly quicker warm up. How are you measuring the intake temps as I never saw any different at all in mine, and as the intake is over the engine I doubt you will.

Given how "dirty" the Aygo is underneath in terms of airflow I suspect the Kamm makes no difference at all.

Willing to be convinced though.
