Toyota -- bring the 4-door Yaris HB & the iQ to the USA!

Hi y'all,

I am hoping that the rumors that the Toyota iQ will be sold in the USA (as a Scion model) are true!

57 MPG Toyota iQ Goes on Sale in Europe, No U.S. Release Date Yet : TreeHugger

Toyota iQ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

3 meters long (just 10" longer than the Smart), 3 adults + 1 child, front wheel drive, 5 star crash rating (with a rear air bag!), 1.0L & 1.3L gasoline, or 1.4L diesel, ~1,900 pounds.

The 4 door Yaris hatchback is a worthy replacement for the Scion xA (with a better Cd (0.29 vs 0.31). Seating for 5 (4+1?) and a hatchback, which is far superior to the Yaris sedan. The Scion xD is too heavy, and the engine is too big, and the cD is 0.32 -- all make it less effiecient compared to the xA.

What's the EPA on those??

SVOboy 10-18-2008 12:05 PM

The iQ is coming to the US as a Scion, or so they say.

I hope they bring that iQ, ill be the first in line for one. First new car ive seen in about 5-6 years that made me go "ooooh i want it"

tjts1 10-18-2008 07:48 PM

They already sell the 4 door yaris in the USA. I saw one on the streets a couple of days ago.

The IQ will be shown at the Detroit auto show in January with a scion badge on the hood.

Kewl beans! I get my wishes! Though it appears that the Yaris "5-door liftback" only comes with a 4-speed automatic. Decent EPA estimates none the less.

I'll take a 1L iQ, thanks! They have a very smart looking grill slit, and decent aero detailing, given the overall shape. I like the front wheel drive, the weight -- it should be very nimble indeed.

Hello,

Some more info is found here:

The iQ’s 0.299 drag coefficient is quite good.
Quote:

Two powerplants will be offered, a 1.0-liter VVT-i gasoline engine and a 1.4-liter D-4D diesel. The 3-cylinder, 12-valve DOHC gasoline engine is rated 67 horsepower, while the 4-cylinder, 8-valve OHC common rail turbocharged diesel produces 88 horsepower. A new 1.3-liter dual VVT-i gasoline engine with stop-and-start technology will be available later in 2009.

The 1.0-liter engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with a Multidrive continuously variable transmission optional, while the diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed manual. The 1.0-liter VVT-i manual version gets an estimated 56 mpg fuel economy overall, while the diesel variant has an overall fuel economy of 57 mpg.

The driver is also presented with information to allow driving more efficiently. A Gear Shift Indicator on manual transmission models indicates when to shift up or down for best fuel economy. Multidrive models have an ‘ECO’ driving indicator lamp on the multi-information display that encourages more economical driving by signaling when fuel is being saved. Current and average fuel consumption is also continuously shown.

I didn't see this post, I made a post about the iQ in the general efficiency forum. Here's the story on Yahoo that I referenced:

Yeah but you know it's not going to get any of those european mpg numbers. Somehow our mpg is going to be lowered 10-20

NeilBlanchard 10-20-2008 08:12 AM

Hi,

If they use Imperial gallons, that yields a higher number. If they convert from L/km into US gallons/mile, then we'll get "accurate" numbers. Unless Toyota has done something to really help the FE, my guess is that the 56mpg and 57mpg numbers are the Imperial gallons; since the Smart car with a 1L engine, and 50 pounds lighter than the iQ gets ~45mpg in the US.

NeilBlanchard 01-12-2009 12:52 PM

Hi,

Is there official confirmation of the iQ yet? (I hate the Detroit auto show website...)

Also, Toyota is saying there will be an EV version in 2012:

You guys are forgetting one key element here ... Scion is Toyota's youth brand, their goal is to attract a younger buyer market, not introduce fuel saving vehicles. So chances are unless it is marketed as the next "cool" thing, it woud just be introduced through Toyota, not Scion ...

akcapeco 01-31-2009 10:21 AM

The Yaris 4door HB will only be offered with... the automatic.

MetroMPG 02-09-2009 11:04 AM

That's very weird of Toyota.

Not unprecedented though. Try to find a 4 door hatchback Metro with a 5-speed. Available, but uncommon.

Funny 02-09-2009 12:50 PM

The Yaris 4-door HB comes with an auto tranny. The 5 speed manual is an option. So there are five speed manual HB being released, just how many is the question.

NeilBlanchard 02-13-2009 08:49 AM

Hiya,

There is still no word on the iQ coming to the USA, is there? I found an iQ fan site, btw, and it is a quiet place...
