TPMS - It does nothing.

It's been like that for a long time now. I guess drivers can't be assed to fill up their tires no matter how much the car beeps at them.. |
that is painful to see. Reminds me of a friend of a friend who thought the oil light meant put some oil in it when it is convenient...
|
Dont forget the over heat light means to add water and the brake light means to add brake fluid.
|
Tire PMS?
|
In either case, I wouldn't know!
|
I got a head ache, anyone got any midol?
|
I work auto parts and I get a lot of people who a ask me what that light is.
|
When I had that light I went to advance auto and they just knew they couldnt get the part, referred me to the dealer. Found out from a 3rd party tire store I had 2 bad sensors. Got 4 "used" ones from ebay for the price of 1 at the dealer.
Dealer couldnt program, went back to tire store. Said all 4 had full battery or charge and reprogrammed the car. Quote:

We sell tpms sensors but can't program them. I'd be happy if tpms didn't exist.
|
The owner could just look at the tyre ? Eyes 1.0 seems superior.
|
I love tire pressure sensors. I sell parts at a dealership. :p
What do I love more than tire pressure sensors? Lug nuts with chrome caps. |

I fixed the TPMS sensor issue on my (dear departed) Fit with electrical tape. |
I'm glad to hear the new Fit uses indirect TPMS, with no sensors. It compares wheel rpm and if one is turning slower (or is it faster?) than the rest, then shows the light. It won't help if all four are low, but no added parts to break.
|
Because Americans are too busy texting and taking selfies to pay attention to their car, I am forced to have this garbage on my vehicle.
I have TPMS on my 14 year old Jeep. It's called walk around and look to see if there is a flat tire. I also have a $5 tire gauge ... |
yes, it takes a couple more sensors though and some logic, i.e. IF steering wheel sensor says straight ahead AND brakes are not applied THEN check the wheel speed sensors.

I'm almost positive it would light up with a spare. It probably has logic to compare both front wheels to each other, and both rears to each other, or something like that. That would make sense to me.
Of course it would be turning faster. The flattened bottom of the tire makes the effective ground-to-axle radius smaller. The top half doesn't matter, just the bottom. Edit: in the case of the Corvette mentioned above, its front and rear tires are different sizes. (c6 has 25.7" dia fronts and 26.85" dia rears) There must be some compensation for that in the logic that controls the warning light. |
I'm wondering why you would have abs on a corvette myself...
|
I wished you had my parts, I had to order them from ebay and wait a few days for them in the mail. Ever try to find wheel studs or nutz for a 95 suzuki sidekick?

I like the lugnuts with the stainless caps. Yes the underlying nut can corrode, swell up, and mess up the cap and it's fit to the wrench. But on wheels with exposed lugnuts they look so much better than regular lugnuts and actual chrome gets rusty far too quickly.
I bought replacement sheathed lugnuts and my strategy is to soak them in hot thick oil such that the space between the sheath and the lugnut is filled with oil thus preventing the dreaded corrosion. /hijack |
TPMS is a Ford Focus doesn't pop until some 19 PSI.
On an F150, it is a bit higher but still dangerously low. Honestly, was a bit disappointed in my family members when I learned their behaviors. Some stern chats have made tire pressure checks routine for them. |

Dorman/Motormite WHEEL NUT M12-1.25 ACORN - 19MM HEX, 24MM LENGTH List $5.86 ea, I can have 7 in an hour and all you want later today. WHEEL NUT M12-1.25 ACORN - 13/16" HEX, 35MM LENGTH List $6.06 ea, I can have 12 in an hour and all you want later today. WHEEL NUT M12-1.25 MAG , SHORT - 13/16" HEX, 1.454" LENGTH List $4.05 ea, I can have 10 later today. WHEEL NUT M12-1.25 MAG - 13/16" HEX, 1.684" LENGTH List $4.11 ea, I can probably get them in a day or so. WHEEL LUG NUT M12-1.25 - 13/16" HEX, 1.38" LENGTH List $3.56 ea, I can have 10 in an hour and 10 more later today. M12-1.25 SERRATED WHEEL STUD - 12.45MM KNURL, 33.5MM LENGTH List $4.43 ea, I can probably get them in a day or so. M12-1.25 SERRATED WHEEL STUD - 12.45MM KNURL, 37.5MM LENGTH List $4.79 ea, I can have 10 later today. These are just what one of the stores in town lists. My screen shows their shelf and their local warehouse's shelf, but the other parts they list are in the system and probably on the shelf at the next warehouse over- I just can't tell exactly how available they are without calling and bothering one of their counterpeople. I hate bothering counterpeople who are probably trying to post something on the web at the moment. The chrome capped lug nuts are great because the chrome caps aren't very forgiving when a partially trained monkey takes an impact gun to them with a "close enough" sized socket. This ain't horseshoes or hand grenades, and there are some lug nuts that I sell in 20s to some of the chain type garages. They're also my best customers for pressure sensors: a careful wrench can avoid damaging them, but a guy who demolishes lug nuts for a living can only stand there and mumble something about how the aluminum rotted away, it was about to fall apart anyway and you're lucky it happened while you were here. |
Wow, any relation to advance auto, napa or autozone? What trucked me over was the fact someone used a 33.5mm up front on the drivers side and 37.5 for all the rest and 3 wheels.
So, when a nut was put on the 33.5mm nut and tighten up it wrapped the threads. Unless you replaced the same nut on this stud you screwed up the threads on another studd if you hammer it on and so on. I went through 2 studds and 3 nutz figuring this out. I said screw it all and ordered 30 of the 37.5 and replaced them all and bought matching nutz. 'M12-1.25 SERRATED WHEEL STUD - 12.45MM KNURL, 33.5MM LENGTH List $4.43 ea, I can probably get them in a day or so. My wife is a TPMS.

LOL, lets leave the initials to the imagination, but I swear she can tell when the tires are 2 psi low, until I inflated them to 42 PSI. Reminds me, I need to check all of my tires, only time the tpms came on on the Fiesta was when I first got it. There was a nail in the left rear tire, plugged it in the garage and it has held pressure the same as the rest close to 27 k miles.
regards Mech |
Dont forget your spare tire, if equipped. Some include a tpms sensor as well.
|
Napa lists the front studs as being the 37.5 mm ones, part NOE 6413144. List shows as $4.78 ea.
they list the 33.5s as the rears, pn NOE 6413158, list $3.66 ea. We don't do much with Advance or Autozone. Napa's catalog is very good but they're farther away from us than Federated and delivery is spottier. |
With my 3 Chevy's, just have to push a few button's to check each tires pressure. I've only had one flat with any of them, gave me plenty of warning to fill up to make it home and plug it.
|
Unnecessary in my opinion, just like the backup cameras that are required on new cars in the next few years. Funny, if you walk to the back of the car to make sure you arent gonna run over anything, you pass the tires - two birds with one stone, and you didnt need all the extra b.s. that adds more cost to the vehicle and maintenance. I wish they would educate drivers instead of legislating out common sense.
|
Car drivers should perform a "walk around" just like aircraft pilots do so as to visually ensure that all parts are attahed and in good working order (wink, wink).
