searching for a killer mpg bike

I don't know much about mechanics so I thought I'de ask you. I don't need more than a 250cc. I guess my question is should I look for a fuel injected bike or carbed? Will one benefit from wai and other engine mods more than the other? I have my eye on a new honda crf250L though it will be a street bike it looks like the narrower tires should be cheaper to buy. However Im not ruling out any bike at this time. thanks alot friends

Then you are leaning towards the wrong bike on both counts. The 250L will be terrible to ride on the highway with fast Cali traffic. Completely tapped out by 75 mph and blowing all over the place. The dual sport tires won't last. I got 17,000 out of my stock rear on my CBR250R and the front is about half worn. The stock tires are fantastic. And the canyon racers of both the CBR and the Ninja300 which has the same size, take them off without even trying them because they think they have to have a street racing tire. Fresh take offs can be had all day long for $100 per set.

Best street 250 as far as mileage goes will be the CBR250R. You want F.I. if you are looking for ease of use and high MPG.

Depending on your size, and regular highway cruise speeds, the CBR may not work for you but it's still a better choice than the CRF250L IMO.

Ninja 300 is good also, but hasn't been out very long and will command top-dollar used most likely. Any of the small bikes will be easy on tires.

You could try an old buell blast, my dad had one and claimed 70+ mpg.
They should be pretty cheap now as well
