Trailer Hitch Aero
We have a '95 Civic sedan that we use as a family car-- we have some road trips planned in the not-super distant future (next 6-18 months), and I want some more cargo space. I initially wanted a cartop carrier, but after reading here and thinking about practicality, I think I'd rather have a hitch-mounted cargo box/rack.
If I make one so that it's more or less aerodynamic, will it still hurt mileage (beyond the added weight, I mean)? Will it function as a kammback/boattail, even if it's only level with the trunk and not flow-optimized off of the roofline? |
If you keep it out of the wind , tucked behind the body top bottom and sides a few inches you will minimize drag
Rain & Dust gets into everything you will have to make the box impervious to it. |
Good to know about weatherproofing. I'm mainly thinking of somewhere to put a cooler/tent, so minimal dust would be okay, but I definitely would want a water-proof box-- so might as well find/make one that keeps both out.

I hadn't seen that thread. That's pretty much exactly what I want to do. Thank you!
