truck guy fuel log?

i just got back from a 1500 mile trip to Florida with my truck. on the way to Florida i had 600 lbs in the bed and on the way back i was towing a 2000 lb trailer. i just entered the trip in my fuel log and it brought my average way down and i was wondering what other truck guys are doing with their fuel log when it comes to towing and carrying heavy stuff? i am up in the air about if i should remove the entries. if i remove these fuel entries from my fuel log it will look allot better but then nobody will be able to learn from my fuel log. i am leaning more toward leaving them in my fuel log because it is a truck and in the real would that is what a truck does. just wondering what other truck owners are doing with their fuel log?

Leave 'em in, note in the comments for each tank what the conditions were, and know that your 90-day average won't use those values in just three short months...

If you normally only use your truck like others use their cars then you are getting pretty lousy mileage for a car, I tend to use my car like others might use a truck and I write down every gallon of fuel (some day I'll grab my notebook and enter it in the online fuel log), I tend to be more impressed by people who can get good mileage while using their vehicle to the fullest.

+1

I just add notes regarding how I used my truck for that tank.

More data is better than less data.

leave em in. Mileage is mileage. I haul wood and get groceries with mine. It is a truck and gets treated/used as such. You can't save money/increase mileage by leaving bad numbers out. I USE my truck and I use my real mpg numbers. I usually average 20-25 mpg. I have now removed A/C, P/S, SMOG, and shortened the belt. We shall see what happens. So far, so good.:thumbup:

Good luck

i justs gott'd an f350 to pull a 14,000 lbs trailer everywhere. i won;t disconnect it. i;ll take the trailer to the grocery store, and to drive to the end of my driveway to check the mail. it;s a diesel, so i gets great mileage no matter what. like an old-school hybrid.

It ain't a contest.

Filtering entries is akin to stuffing a bra then right? Makes it look better than it really is?

brucey 04-20-2010 10:53 AM

Yup, its not a contest. I enter the low numbers on mine too and just say why its so low. (Usually pulling something) So what if the average goes down?

It's best to count everything because your truck is in the real world. However, it's your choice. You do have the option to make a separate garage entry for the same truck, maybe calling it "old red taco with load" or "old red taco at work" or "old red taco punchin the clock". Put all the fuel logs with loads in there. Saving fuel when carrying loads is important too.

i have both trip in my fuel log. i was just wondering what other guys were doing with thier truck fuel log.

i was getting better than the 22mpg combined epa fuel rating for my truck with the trailer with 2000lbs in it

I like that idea. It would be nice to put those into a separate log for at-a-glance comparisons to other similarly-loaded driving.

my car doesn't support scan gauge.
i have to pump gas after each trip to calculate results. i'm too lazy to do that anymore.

some people just enter in one or more insanely great trips and that's it.

truth is the fuel log, it ain't a contest.

My own sucked air in fuel for awhile, making it worse than a truck..I still jotit down, goes with the real history.

Just to put my mileage where my fingers are, I just had my absolute worst all-time tank since joining Ecommodder :

Code:

Fill date    Distance    Fill amount  MPG
2010-05-04  128.6 mi.  3.87 US gal  33.23 US

There are two reasons for this. One, I have started commuting, so there is more weight in the car and compromise on my part in terms of my driving style. The second is that I was helping my wife with her jewelry business. I was hauling art-fair tents, tables, and other assorted junk up and down hills where I live. It was the ultimate MPG black hole. Lots of short trips on steep inclines.

However, 33 MPG with two people in the car is like 66 MPG with one person in the car. And, when my mini-wagon is hauling stuff and doing *work*, it is making $ for me and mine.
