I remember when Mt. St Helens popped it's cork, I'd thought about putting big diesel truck cyclone aircleaners on the back bumper [brackets] of my VW panel van to filter intake and cooling air for the much smaller engine.

A level 5 clean room for our engines?

I wonder how accurate the claims are, such as "up to 85% of wear caused by 5 to 20 micron sized particles"? What particle size do standard paper filters, filter to?

So it seems most of the particles are removed via centrifugal force like a bagless vacuum? I wonder what the energy requirements are for that, and why all vehicles don't employ that technique, or at least all turbocharged vehicles?

A cheap Fram air filter should be filtering 100% down to 1 micron.

It’s always been a good idea. Space has always been a problem. Then plumbing integrity. I think those two kill it as cost doesn’t really justify itself even past warranty period. IOW, OEM air intake systems are good enough.

A centrifugal oil cleaner faces the same type problems. Needs quite high oil pressure to operate. And leaks are always possible. A SS mesh filter to replace the OEM disposable also means correct service procedures.

I’ve looked at both for pickup Diesel engines. Likely worthwhile for HD service in deserts, etc (copy mining equipment, etc).

It’s the wrong end of the stick. In the end. An enclosed & insulated garage is what most everyone needs for extended vehicle life. Much more than home expansion of air-conditioned space for long-term value for money spent.

Along the lines of:

- Hurrying the age where a vehicle is paid for with cash.

- One family vehicle (sedan) to serve as all-purpose. One vehicle that can carry entire family. Pull a variety of trailers. Serve other uses (like a Unimog; that drivetrain is useful; run a hydraulic generator).

- high level of service.

If one can eliminate the purchase of even one car from a lifetime, it obviates gold-plating several for low-time service requirements.

So long as “correct” vehicle spec is “me, Me, ME!” versus extended family obligation we will try to spend to save.

I think Unimog a useful concept. Not great at any one thing (past basic leverage), but a widely capable portable power train. Slow or high fuel burn irrelevant. We are “taught” those two things matter. They don’t.

Guaranteeing the profit of others is all that matters. If FE mattered we’d time the traffic lights. It’s the illusion of “responsibility “ (appearing virtuous; like being a Democrat) without the changes to make it realistic.

Can you get a great job without a car? Why not?

If we owned family businesses in cities and accompanying locales that catered to this, it wouldn’t matter that Johnson sputtered into town every so often to buy a clutch of cigars.

Very long service life should be the gauge.

When I was working at my last job where we were an OEM making rock crushing equipment (dust galore), we used these on all of our diesel engines.

It's a precleaner — equivalent to the foam socks they pull over air cleaners in Baja racers.

They show sand being ejected, but smaller particles won't be as affected by the centrifugal force. My question would be if it is as effective with smaller particle size.

Seems as though in much of the country (and Canada), the body's likely to rust out long before the engine &c wears out.

Why would you think that? My vehicles range in age from 16 to 30 years, and (as far as I can see) show no performance degradation despite having been parked outside for as long as I've owned them.

Interesting idea... basically just putting a cyclonic vacuum canister in front of your filter...

I vacuum all kinds of fine dust with mine, and the post filter barely ever has anything on it.
