Universal plug-in hybrid kit for about $3K?
The Kit That Turns Any Car Into A Hybrid | This Could Be Big - Yahoo! News
Has anyone else heard of this? I caught that on Yahoo's main page this morning and I'm really excited about it. I hope they can keep the price down. I think it would be pretty wild if I could turn my Mustang GT into a Hybrid, lol. |

Theres also other conversions out there such as this 1
Bolt-On Hybrid Conversion Adds Up To 30% More MPG it attaches to the drive shaft in rwds at the rear pumpkin, its claims are not as much as this kit, but it would be an alternative if you did not have the room to place the kit in your wheels |
There's an even simpler Indian system that's been in the pipeline for years. Two variants. One rear axle variant as in the second link, and one that attaches a hybrid drive motor to the crank pulley as an assist motor and stop-start motor rolled into one.
|
the last variation sounds almost identical to the BAS hybrid GM came up with and has renamed a few times.
personally..... i'd rather deal with something that would allow for traction in both sets of tires and will allow for electric only travel, if desired. |
The boggle is waterproofing the electrics if you have them hanging off the axle... though I'm told by electric assemblers that they're reasonably weatherproof.
|
This conversion needs to be totally enclosed. The big problem I see is those strong permanent magnets out in the open. They will catch any magnetic particles that come near them - brake dust, road dust, etc. I drive about 2 miles of dusty (most of the time) dirt roads every time I leave my house.
Try dragging a strong magnet through dirt, and you'll see the potential problem. |
