USA Smart + EU Manual Transmission?

Hello -

Would it be possible to :

1 - Buy a USA Smart
2 - Import a 6 speed Smart manual tranny from the EU
3 - Transfer said tranny into the USA Smart?

I would think that the USA Smart's ECU/PCM would be upset, but also helpless to do anything about it (heh heh heh). I think you would need to keep the USA ECU/PCM for emissions compliance.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no such thing as a fully manual (i.e. with a clutch pedal) tranny for the smart. Earlier Euro models had 6 speed autos with the manual shift option. Since almost everything on the smart (like the throttle and trans) is electronically controlled you'd need the appropriate ECU to go with it.

Anyone know the name and model of the engine used? Far as I know its Smart specific, but if it has any other applications (bare bones model) there could be a stick that bolts up to it

Hello -

I was talking to my friend last night and he told me that the engine from the Smart is from Mitsubishi ... now :

1 - If the same engine exists in Mitsubishi Kei-Cars and ...
2 - If the Kei-Cars offer tall-geared manual transmissions and ...
3 - If the manual transmission would fit in the Smart engine bay and ...
4 - If the gear-shift linkage could be transferred into the Smart then ...

... Mayyyyyyyybe it would be doable. But not by me, ;) .

The Japanese market smarts did have a special 660 cc Kei engine and it mounted to the regular 6 speed smart auto. Looking at the engine transmission package for the smart you see a wonderously compact packaging job. I doubt you could fit any other type of tranny in there without moving the engine or changing the wheelbase.

The most effective mod you could make to a smart is to remove the 200+ lbs it gained for US certification.

Ok. It looks like the Smart drivetrains were optimized for UMC (Unit Manufacturing Cost => KISS => Keep It Simple, Smart).
