Use of Grease to Lower Drag

Alright guys, I have to go to work but I wanted to post ths so for the next 18 hours, you all can think about this

So I was just cleaning a plate, and there waa grease. As in fat. I tried to clean t off of my sink, and my fingers were all gross and geeasy. The water just slid over it, and it took soap and very hot water to get t off.

SO clearly ts woud make a good finish for water, but could ths have any possible benefit for fuel efficieny? As in making the car more smooth?

I am thinking to use it for the front end on my next road teip, instead of painters tape to protect the front end from bugs.

So I don't think t wil do anything, but I jist wanted to toss the idea to you guys. Let me know what you think!

:)

We just had a discussion on boundary layers and how they aren't laminar on cars and how they are rather thick and get even moreso as they go to the back of the vehicle and how all that makes the surface finish not critical.

But yeah, interesting idea for keeping the bugs from sticking.

It might also help with the dead pedestrians piling up on the front of your car.

I suppose you could grease the tyres up and see if the reduction in friction helps any.

Caution: Don't do this.

Was this on the forum? If so, where at?

How would you keep from accumulating a layer of dirt on the car ?
You would have to wash the car more often .

Thanks, markweatherill. Now I've got to clean the coffee off my monitor.

I don't think greasing the nose is a good idea. You're going to collect dirt and bugs. It's going to streak backwards and cleaning it off is going to be a nightmare. Stay with the painter's tape.

Yes, I have a thin layer of grease under the engine of my car and all it does is collect dirt...

When I was in high school, I had a buddy who was a bit of a prankster. He convinced his little brother to oil the caliper brake pads and rims of his bicycle. Needless to say, the little brother had a little more excitement than he planned on when it was time to use the brakes the first time...

"We had Twister, twister was fun, but my older brothers never let me play when they played, so I put Vaseline on the colored circles. Left leg, broken!

"Should have let me played. I said please."

I thought that the was a whole lot funnier when I was a whole lot younger.

I like the idea of painter's tape to catch bugs, but they only bother me on my windshield. What can you do about that?

Automatic laser array! I read about one on a spaceship in a sci fi novel! :D

There may be some surface design that could be used on high flow areas such as mirrors and such for a tiny gain, or to delay flow separation , might be worth an experiment or just so you feel like your improving it, how about a golf ball textured mirror surface.

Xist 12-15-2012 08:43 AM

I would suggest avoiding golf ball and Mythbusters references.

I suppose that's one way to practice DWB.

When I was confined to an electric wheelchair we use to wrap the tires in silver duct tape and go sliding around, like out side on the grass. :D

Well all good there, In the field of sailboat racing , certain bottom paints have been outlawed because they are pricey to install on the boat , but they work , some of them employ a surface described as sharks'skin,
