Used deep cycle battery
I am wanting to mount a deep cycle in the trunk of my 99 Escort 4 door sedan, so that I can remove the alternator. I see people buying used batteries on different forums. I am wondering how to tell if a used battery is any good, and what will meet my needs. I am driving 95 miles a day, I hope to soon get my job relocated to 5-10 miles from home. Would a Everstart Maxx 29 do the job ok. 875 CCA 124 amp hours. I saw one at the store and they are huge. $77 new, the man wants 50 for a year old battery.
What is best to charge a deep cycle? I learned a battery should be charged at 2 amps max to prolong its life. Yay or nay? |
I have a Optima Yellowtop 34 series that I bought December 12 for $220 that I'll ship to you for 175... comes with all original mounting accessories (the yellow thing on the right is a tray full of them, and 2 accessory mounting posts for the front.
This is the mother of all batteries for running high loads, like without an alternator. The jeep crowd uses them for winching, lights, etc. which was what I thought I was going to do before my wife told me I was going to be a daddy.. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3.../yellowtop.jpg I bought it to use on my jeep, but ended up selling the Jeep and didn't want to give the dealer $220. The battery might have 20 starts on it... maybe check out optimas site: http://www.optimabatteries.com/_medi.../specs/D34.pdf you can't get much more deep cycle than that? |
best way is to load test them. load it up so about 200 amps are flowing and see how long it takes to drop below 11v. barring a good load tester, not really any good way I know of other than trying it.
Did you ask him why he's getting rid of it? yes, for a deep cycle keep the amps lower and charge it whenever you aren't using it. Everstart batteries come from Walmart. Not a fan. my brother had one in his car and it was dead within a year. Unfortunately he was too far from a walmart to get it replaced. now he has an interstate. I know one example doesn't seal the case but I've heard dozens of problems with them. That's also starting batteries, not deep cycles. |
