serial port programing on EV speed controllers.

I've never done any thing with the serial port on a speed controller, so I'm mostly putting feelers out there for a few ideas that are bouncing around in my head.
My idea is, I have a friend lined up who is willing to write an I-phone app so that an I-phone can be used instead of a lap top to give you gauges from the serial port on an Alltrax speed controller and I'm wondering how closely related the Open Revolt speed controller is with it's serial port, in other words can they run the same program for gauges and adjusting set points in the controller?
Does anyone have any idea how other speed controllers compare? is there a standardization?

I wonder if that is something worth contacting one of the controller companies about?

All the new EVs (LEAF, VOLT, etc) have pretty cool systems for connecting to smart phones.

Wouldn't that be a benefit for motor controller companies too?

I DON'T know the details of how these things communicate, but most of them are designed to talk to a Windows PC. It might be really easy to communicate to a Windows Phone.

I know that you can make an Alltrax AXE talk to an old Palm Pilot....

In talking to the friend of mine who has written Iphone Apps in the past, he said it would be simple and easy to make it interface with the controller, of course he has not yet started in on this project, mostly because I said I would pay for the Iphone app developer license ($100) and a few other costs that would come with the project along with paying said friend, as this is the kind of thing that he does for a living and business is slow for him, but he thought that it sounded very simple and straight forward.
But if you have a program that can talk to an AllTrax can it also talk to an Open Revolt controller? and can it talk to other programmable controllers?
