Video Mirrors

This is overdue for it's own thread, I think. Nissan has a really high tech rear view video mirror on their ZEOD racing car - it has a computer identifying moving objects, and it marks them in red when they are overtaking:

Neat , just like a Video game, some of the driving games have that feature - without the speed pass arrow feature.

I have a camera on my mirror stalk , The Beetle uses its door hinge as its the mirror stalk so with the mirror removed the stalk is left, I drilled into the plastic cover and mounted a 1" round camera in it. I have to mount 2 more Cameras , one in the back window and one on the passenger mirror stalk.

Maybe 1 camera placed right is enough, the driver in the race did alright with just one camera. So mounting it on the roof would be effective.

.

I have a back-up and passenger side camera in the Geo. The drivers side is currently a tiny bicycle mirror.

The back-up monitor is 7" diagonal touch screen with a license plate bracket mounted camera.

The passenger side monitor has a 4.3" diagonal screen with a low profile 360 degree adjustable camera.

The camera is now where the passenger side view mirror was.

Mine is the type you strap over your rear view mirror , it has a 7" screen on the left side and a mirror on the right side. When its turned off it becomes a full rear view mirror.

I just ordered a whole setup and will be putting it in my Insight. Full build will follow, but I bought:

Amazon.com : 4.3 Inch LCD TFT Rearview Monitor screen for Car Backup Camera x3

Amazon.com : HDE E336 Waterproof Rear Vehicle Backup Camera With 170 degree Viewing Angle : Back Up Car Camera : Car Electronics x1

Amazon.com : PYLE PLCM22IR Flush Mount Rear View Camera with 0.5 Lux Night Vision : Vehicle Backup Cameras : Car Electronics x2

I know I will need more for the wiring, but when I have my whole set ready, the wiring should be easier.

Neil,

I didn't know that you had cameras already. :o

Like you said in your thread, they take getting used to. Mine are 170 degree angle cameras. The rear camera will show cars in either lane to within a few feet of the rear bumper clearly. With the passenger side camera it's weird seeing objects on the screen that are equal to or forward of the front bumper. A narrower field of view is needed.

Other problems.

One problem with mine is that both cameras show a distance grid that I can not remove. :( It must be built into the camera itself.

A smaller inconvenience is with the 4.3" TFT monitor. When wearing my polarized sunglasses the screen turns black.

Also, the IR diodes burned out on my license plate bracket mounted camera. They can\'t take running continuously. Probably because there is no heat sink.

The experiment continues...

often the distance grid is a little diode they put inline with the video output cable, it may be in the camera body or along the cable itself. what I did before was crush it, and the lines were gone, might be better to remove it..
