VW Golf in windtunnel video ( smoke test )

I wanted to share this video i stumbled upon that is impressive because it shows the car tested from all angles - not just the usual side shot showing just the front half of the car.

Here is an old Golf for comparison.
Despite looking like a brick, there is attached flow.

The turntable side shots are indeed very interesting.

Very interesting. I particularly enjoyed the short segment when the tester moved the smoke wand to the mirror area.

I thought the overall shots used too many smoke trails. As the trails thickened, it was difficult to see exactly what was happening. But great video and thanks!

The turn table to see cross wind impact is great. Overhead cameras would really rock. Imagine smoke trail arrays swept off center sideways. Also turned horizontally and swept up and down. (drool)

Did you miss the last part of the video ?
There is a sideways overhead shot.

Nice to see. I could have sworn aerohead's album had a photo of the Mk1 Golf in a wind tunnel, showing the wake. Anyway.

Edit: Found one. This is an early prototype "swallowtail". Looks to be production tooling though. Possibly lower ride height.

I did not see the 3D wake behind the car in normal flow and asymmetry in cross wind. We know base drag is important. Wind tunnel studies that focus up stream (onset flow) within the symmetry plane and crop footage at the end of the vehicle leave knowledge on the table. Yes I am greedy.

Nice find. Looks like I need to get going on my Vekke-style rear spoiler on my Golf IV.

What is that, and what would that look like?

smoke

Glad they filled the wake with smoke to allow a look back there. That's the money-shot!
Thank you very much!

I don't mean to hijack but the view with the smoke filling the wake made me wonder if something like Vekke built for his VW Lupo would work on my Golf. Here is a tuft test of a Vekke-spoiler, or more accurately, a Kamm-back on his Lupo.

Phil, in that footage at what time stamp do your eyes see best data please? I'd love to improve my vision. :D

Bob,right at the end,at 3:06-3:07 the wake is fully visualized,close-quarters to the body.
If the test section were longer,we'd see the turbulence trailing back for hundreds of feet.
As Hot Rod Magazine says,"it's the poison of speed." Also mpg!

Thanks, Phil. Clearly my eyes have much to learn.

BTW, Phil did you get my email? I'll be leaving AR soon (missed Bondo - frown) and passing through TX near Sanger en route to desert SW area for winter. If you're home I'd love to stop and shake hands. :)
