VW is going to reveal their all new ID.3 in September, and deliver them in 2020 to buyers in Europe. There are 3 battery pack capacities:

45kWh 330 km (205 miles) WLTP range
58kWh 420 km (261 miles) WLTP range
77kWh 550 km (342 miles) WLTP range

I hope that VW brings the ID.3 to the US, sooner rather than later!

VW says we will get the ID Crozz in 2020 and the Buzz in 2022. No word on if we will get the hatchback but I would guess no since VW is pulling the Golf from the US market.

I was looking for a thread where this would fit. This will do.

VW has announced it is allowing other manufacturers to use its Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB) architecture so that EVs can gain traction.
[snip]
The carmaker has already identified a company that wants to use the MEB architecture: Aachen-based e.Go Mobile AG, maker of the Life electric city car. The startup will be the world’s first external partner to use the electric platform. VW says a dedicated vehicle project is already being planned.

They already make a postal delivery van. The Fridolin of the future.

The more I see the ID.3 the more I like it.

Several things are of interest to me on the ID.3 - it looks like the inside door sills are quite low (maybe 30-40mm / 1 1/4-1 1/2"?), but I was hoping for flat ones, like in the Chevy Bolt EV.

I like the fact that the seat height appears to be 100-130mm / 4-5" higher than the e-Golf - this will help entry and exit ease.

I assume that the ID.3 coasts by default (like the e-Golf), and it has regen integrated on the brake pedal - does it have levels of regen selectable on the accelerator? Are they on the shifter, or on dash / software buttons, or on paddles on the steering wheel?

Does the ID.3 have a direct heating defroster? I hope it has the super-thin layer of silver version.

Does the ID.3 have a heated steering wheel, and/or a heated back seat?

Does the ID.3 have a totally flat underside? What is the Cd of the car?

What is the turning circle of the ID.3?

Can the ID.3 tow a trailer?

Does the ID.3 have a heat pump? If so, is it integrated with the motor / electronics / pack cooling and heating?

NeilBlanchard 07-09-2019 02:35 PM

Okay - this is big! The ID.3 has a Cd of 0.26! This is mentioned at about 36 minutes into this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US3vccIQn2g

It is in German, but has English subtitles.

Vman455 07-09-2019 03:18 PM

He says 0.26 "but a precise figure has not been provided"--so I would take that with a grain of salt as yet.

Still chasing the 1947 Volkhart-Saggita then. It's been measured at 0.19—0.21.

I know, I know.... it's got more room inside.

An all black ID.3 with minimal camouflage:

Bit of a weird Kammback

I hope their prices are more tolerable than the per kWh price of the e-up ...

On the platform: the high rear "transaxle" isn't very forthcoming to a van spin-off

[citation needed]

They've shown a microbus and a dune buggy on the MEB platform.

I doubt it would raise the floor height more than Chrysler's Stow n Go seating.

ID.4X aka ID Crozz

We are seeing the next vehicle that uses the MEB platform - the ID.4X aka the ID Crozz:

https://insideevs.com/news/362808/vo...rozz-spy-camo/

https://insideevs.com/news/366227/sp...id-crozz-id4x/

It was out driving along side 2 different ID.3 test vehicles:
https://insideevs.com/news/366169/vo...seen-together/

The ID.4X seems to be the AWD variant of the ID.4, and it is slightly smaller than the US Tiguan. It is longer and taller than the ID.3, which is slightly taller than the Golf, and a tiny bit shorter length than the Golf.

When are you getting one Neil? You should start your own EV review channel. I'd watch yours before the other guys.

Liquid cooling/heating for the battery, or what?

$30k for 44 kWh sounds about right. That would be ~$20k after subsidies where I live.

NeilBlanchard 09-10-2019 01:57 PM

I wish I could buy one - and maybe they will bring it to the US at some point.

Questions:

Does it have a direct heating windshield defroster? If so, is it using a very thin (molecule?) layer of silver inside the glass? How much energy does it consume?
Is the steering wheel heated? As an option, or standard?
Does it have a heat pump? If so, is it using the motor and electronics?
Is there a light inside the charging port? Does the plug lock all the time, or are there options on how / when it locks?
What are the quick charging speeds, for the 3 battery pack capacities?
Are all the lights LED's? Do the headlights adjust for level?
Does it coast by default (I hope)? What regen modes does it have?
Does it have adaptive creep?
Does it adjust the passenger side mirror in tandem with the driver side mirror?
Are the front seats height adjustable?
Are the front and /or rear seats heated?
What is the audio system - how many speaker drivers, and what inputs does it have? How does it sound?
What is the turning circle diameter? What are the wheel and tire sizes?
Can it have a hitch? What is it rated for?

freebeard 09-10-2019 02:40 PM

Sounds like you've been thinking about it. :)

I like the icons on the brake and throttle pedals.
