It is ~15cm shorter than the Golf, but has a significantly longer wheelbase. They are saying 400-600km range for different battery packs - which is ~248-372 miles. Production is 2020 - which sounds realistic.

4 years out? How hard can it be to swap EV-drive train for ICE-drive train? Especially when the 'body' already exists in production?

NeilBlanchard 09-29-2016 12:50 PM

Neither of those things are correct - this is based on a ground-up new EV chassis, called MEB:

And it is not some "body" they are already building. It is not unlike the Nissan IDS Concept:

Does this one have a 'defeat' device as well ? ;)

NeilBlanchard 10-05-2016 12:26 PM

How would that work, on an EV? The car has no emissions.

They already produce that car. It is called the E-Golf and goes 108 miles on a charge.

The ID is a clean sheet of paper design specifically designed to be electric.

Since it is VW, it will be priced at $40k US more or less. My guess, $42k US. But, then again, considering that it has a range of more than 300 miles US, It really has no competition, except, perhaps a modified Tesla. So, maybe were are looking at $50k US or so. Snazzy car anyway. No range anxiety with this auto! Well, they won't be coming off lease until 2022 or so, plenty of time to save up.

On the EPA test cycle we are looking at about 200-225 miles range or the same as the Bolt and Model 3. I would expect the price to be about the same or about $35K to $38K. By 2020 Tesla and GM will have burned through all of their EV tax credits but VW will still have most of theirs left. That is a $7500 price advantage for VW to play with.
