vx clutch switch - cruise control - mystery
Hi,
Both VXs, our 92 and 95 came without factory cruise control. The '95 has no secondary clutch switch, the one that told the cruise it was OK to run because the foot was off the clutch pedal. The '92, however, has one of those switches. Any reason the '92, without factory cruise, had to know that a foot was NOT touching the clutch pedal? Something to do with airbag? Reason I'm asking, I am adding an aftermarket cruise, and would like to use that switch. Scott |
My 94VX has the switch taking up the cruise's spot too. The computer uses that switch to know that you're pushing in the clutch so it can shut off the upshift light.

'95 had no SIL
...and our '95 it was a California car and had no SIL initially, so it had no switch. I get it. Would it be any big deal to run without that switch so we can have a cruise control safely? The upshift light seems pretty lame anyway.

On Hondas equipped with Cruise, the area for the SIL is where the Cruise indicator is.
I can't say with certainty if the ECU would care if it saw the switch or not. I can say that when I spent a week shifting without touching the clutch pedal that the check engine light never lit up. So you could try it and most likely get away with it. |
Interestingly, the VX was the only one that had the clutch unput line to the ecu, that's pin B7 - in my helms it's marked as D15Z1 specifically. My CX has the upshift light in the cluster, but I don't think I've seen it work, is it even enabled in those trims?
I would use the oem cruise system out of a DX or LX, whichever had cruise. |
if you read the helms manual, it says that the clutch switch (where the cruise clutch switch is) is used in the idle control system. It's possible that lean-burn or other functions will work only intermittently or not at all if this clutch switch isn't working properly. This only applies to the D16Y5, and D15Z1 engines. I don't know if the '01-'05 civic HX uses this clutch switch for this purpose or not.

It may also control the starter. My 1990 CRX uses a clutch switch to keep you from cranking the starter except when the clutch pedal is pressed.

If you want to only use one switch and keep everything working find what voltage it has running through it and if it is normally open or closed. Once you do that find a suitable low power relay or two and use that to show that the clutch is pressed. If both switches operate the same way you might just be able to build a Y connector and run it to both locations.

Holy old thread batman!
