VX swap questions

I've managed to locate a VX powerplant in Boston, but it won't start and the owner doesn't know why. I'm not going to risk it because of the cost of shipping, but I am, however, going to try to buy the transmission off him. If anyone wants his e-mail I can post it for you if you want the engine.

Maybe this isn't the best forum to ask this question (or even the right one, if it isn't, I apologize), but I know Tom or Ben might know this. How much should I pay for one of these transmissions? Its used, with I don't know how many miles on it and the guy wants $200 not including shipping. Also does anyone know one of these transmissions would weigh roughly? or even a link to a site where I could find the weight would be great, for shipping purposes.

I would walk away from that deal. too much money for a transmission that is considered worthless to the Import SpeedFreak world.

Weight is around 60-80lbs. IIRC

Thanks, I am now thinking about making a counter offer of $150, shipping included. Would I still be overpaying?

On a side note, Tom, I would have been perfectly fine with waiting for you to change your engine, but circumstances have changed since my engine might be shot, so I have to move up my timetable. Although, if its OK, I still might be in need of one when you are ready, we'll just have to see how it all pans out.

$150 shipped would be a decent deal in my eyes, if the trans is in good working order with no grinds.

No worries on my motor. you would actually have to wait in line for it as there are others looking to acquire it, lol.

Maybe I should have an auction for the motor once it comes out, a benefit for Ecomodder.com. I don't really think it would fetch much money, it is one of the highest mileage D15Z1 motors on this board.

There's an idea. I would bid for sure.

I have a quick side question (or 2) for you. I saw on your DIY block heater thread, that you had a header. Is there a worthwhile gain in MPG to be had from one? .. and is the header the same from the d15z1 to the rest of the d15's? My bearings seem allright, the leak was a double gasket on the oil filter, I suspect, they gave me a line about a faulty filter but I don't buy it, so I will be keeping this engine for as long as it takes me to find a good d15z1, and I don't want to buy a header now if it won't fit after the swap. Also, what did you do for a warm air intake?

I sold one once for 150 shipped, but I got it for free, :)

I would wait a bit unless you're really stuck. jdmsource.ca (or mehbe jdmresource.ca) can sell you a minty fresh engine and tranny for a reaaaaallllyyyy good deal.

The header that I have really didn't affect mpg negatively, but I really couldn't see a positive affect either. It was done fo rthe simple fact of replacing the catalytic converter cheaply since i could get a "regular" cat converter cheaper.

the header flange for all SOHC D series are the same from 1988-2000

I am still trying to determine any gains between my "Whale Phallace"
intake and my OEM intake. There seems to be a very slight gain in mpg with my "Whale Phallace", but very minute.

Thanks for the info. I think I might play with a WAI and see what happens, I just filled the tank for the first time and reset my odo yesterday, so I think I will go through at least a couple of tanks to get a good baseline, then I will start modding.. the only problem with that is the weather will soon turn warmer and I'm thinking this will have quite an impact on my baseline, so it may not be accurate.
