Warm air intake for d15z1 or other civics.
I have a very cool idea involving a warm air intake for my d15z1. I'm updating this at the same time in my vlx build thread but I figured it might prove valuable on a new thread. THIS WORKS WITH A GUTTED CONVERTER ONLY. It is illegal to gut one but some may choose to do so because of a plugged condition rather than replacing it.
For those who do not know the vx engine (d15z1) came from the factory with a larger converter bolted right by in front of the block. http://i1050.photobucket.com/albums/...1353540625.jpg 92-95 cx and older crx hf converters are the same or very similar. Most warm air intake mods involve pulling air off of the radiator or right by the exhaust system. My plan is to get heat into the intake as fast as possible. Almost immediately after start up which is not possible with the radiator. My plan is to take the converter off and first I must weld an o2 bung in for my afr gauge. Then for my intake mod I will cut holes in the converter horizontally directly across from each other. I'm going to use 2 inch pipe and slide the pipe through the converter so the pipe exits both holes. I will then weld the pipe into the converter. From there I will attach a flexible exhaust repair pipe to the intake air system. The intake will suck the hot concentrated air from inside the tube. Its kind of hard to explain but it will become clearer when I start posting some pics. |
Something like the factory warm air intake that Honda used on the civics in the 1970's and 1980's?

Not exactly. Mine would warm up even faster. I made a crude drawing up I'll post it shortly.

several smaller holes would transfer heat faster(larger surface area); that along with aluminum tubing(but you'd need a high temp sealent for the holes).

not sure where you mean to put smaller holes at.
tomorow i should have the mod mostly done if not all the way. i got the tubes today. i decided on 1.5 inch pipe instead of 2. i felt 2 inches might take up too much room inside the converter. |
what i ment was smaller tubes/more of them; in the 1.5-2" radius.

ohhh gotcha. thats a good idea. ill see how this works first. then if its not hot enough ill try that

Well got most of the hard stuff done. I need a 45 or 90 degree elbow yet for the end to point to the air box.
