We got great MPG's coming home from obx!

Me and my girl went down to the outer banks for a week and stayed in a rental house with some friends 6 of us total.

We took her 2009 2.5l 5 cyl 6 speed auto VW Jetta and loaded up the car early in the morning a lot of crap to take. I had one bag and another for towels and stuff. The girls brought everything that could have possibly fit. We had 3 people in the Jetta and my friend took his car with 3 people and he has a 2004 Saturn Ion. 4 cyl automatic. His car was just about as full as ours.

Headed down we fueled up the day before and had about 10 miles on the tank.

I drove the speed limit 55-70mph and this car does 2200rpms at 70 mph.
I tried to put it in neutral as much as possible and dwl but this is a heavy car and one I don't normally drive. Much to nice for my tastes I'd much rather have a POS to beat on. I tried to follow trucks or a big SUV or anything to cut down the headwind. It was a nice trip we got down to virginia and I found some good corn free 89 for 3.17 and got a good good 35MPG. The record for this car my girlfriends previous record was 30mpg or 31mpg.

So we make it down to buxton NC and had a great time heavy drinking some fishing a camp fire it was a great time I'm sad to be home and working yet again.

After 7 days and 40 miles of short trips around buxton and around town we headed north for home with a lot less in the car then before. Made it up to Grady nc and got some more corn free gas for 3.47. Back home with only a half tank burned.

I get home and the old Kia has some rain water on the floor and the old van has a coolant leak. Back to work we go.

5 cylinder? That's a typo right?

Cobb 08-25-2014 03:48 PM

VW, Audi, Mercedes and a few others have 5 cylinder engines both gas and diesel. Never drove or owned one. I guess its similar to the neatness of a 3?

Yes it is a 5 cylinder. specs say 170 HP. Its a nice car with power everything and the lights stay on all the time. It doesn't mind going from D to N at speed or even back again a little REV match and its like nothing happened. also lets you shift a little like automanual or clutch less shifting but you cant get to 6th until 55MPH I wish it would allow it slower but that's why it is an automatic... so the best way to go is just to push the shifter up over and over again begging for it to up-shift until it go to a set speed for that gear.

It also weights 3500LBS and has all this extra crap I would never pay extra for like heated mirrors and heated seats and fancy fancy floormats.

Thread hijack alert*****
I have had 5(five) 5 cylinder cars from vw & audi. (very odd). They were 2.2 liter back in the day. Very strong pull for their size.

Dig you run the a/c and still get 35mpg?

dirtydave 08-25-2014 05:46 PM

I only ran the AC when I was in DFCO and the scan gauge showed 9999 or neutral, when I hit the gas pedal again I turned it off but kept the blower on. This was only after the girls started to complain.

I was really shocked at see 35MPG I thought it was going to be a good 30 or 32. When I hit the go petal I pushed it in pretty far and up-shifted as much as possible but the low numbers are shocking compared to my KIA.
You have to love this fair weather and corn free gasoline.

Now my girl is pissed I beat her high score. In her defense she does have a long drive into the city every day but a speed limit of only 55MPH there should be no excuse!!

I didnt think Id like heated seats or mirrors til I had them. I wish the seats had more heat for the back vs the cheeks.

mcrews 08-25-2014 06:33 PM

the first time I sat on A/C Seats was August in Texas. It was 105 outside. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven!!!!!

Cobb 08-25-2014 08:38 PM

I had recaro ds seats with heat and cooling. Next car I want the blind spots thing, auto braking, cruse control radar just to name a few features.

I could get down with ac seats. Sounds amazing actually.
