Welcome to the forum.
FYI, the tailgate delete may be hurting your mileage. Anyone with a pickup should study this chart: http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1334841255 |

there's fairly large difference in circumferences between two sizes. about 4.5% |

260miles/10gallons=26mpg. - wrong 260miles*.957=252.2. 252.2/10gallons=25.2mpg Although, if the old tires on the truck aren't the original size, find the original size and google search a tire size calculator to find out the percentage they're off. I have to do the same thing with my ford ranger except backwards cuz I put taller tires on to bring the rpm's lower while cruising. |

cool math!!!! but i know how may miles i have gone because of my gps |

nice chart but the mythbusters test say i will get better mpg with out my tail gate |
Before you buy a new electric fan look at junkyards. Most FWD cars have them, and that is what most cars have been for the last 30 years. You should be able to get one close in size for $20.

test it your self

on a flat stretch at constant speed , say 70mph look at the calculated load PID value write the value down then reinstall the tailgate repeat the test , same conditions , same speed , same direction exactly write the value down post the results here test = do not guess |

thats the only way to know for sure i dont have a scan tool |

Tailgate effects are also dependent on cab & box design - especially respective length of each - something Mythbusters probably didn't mention. SAE has also studied this and concluded differently from Mythbusters. I wonder who does better science... http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...er-up-543.html |
The KA series of engines are awesome...keep the numbers coming and get yourself an ultragauge or scanguage. Well worth it!

and ya a scanguage would rock lol |

That's a moot point if you bend up about 6 sticks of EMT tubing, and skin it with something. an aeroshell kicks butt :)

As far as tailgate removal, it definitely varies model to model. My ranger gets about 2 mpg better without the tailgate but my 2011 Tacoma gets about a little less than 1mpg worse. Also, one of the best aero mods IMO that you can do to a truck is an underbelly tray. Cars, generally speaking, are mostly flat underneath due to there uni-body construction whereas trucks have a full frame so the floor pans are atleast 6 inches above the frame and the beds are even farther up while the axles, exhaust, spare tire, cross members, drivetrain, etc. hang down all producing drag. When I put my ranger back on the road it's one of the first things I'm going to do to it plus depending on what material you use they can be free or close to it |
what air pressure are you running in your tires? I have a 95 nissan 4x4 pickup and I get 26 mpg with 50 psi in tires. no other mods except coasting when possible.
