View from the other side: "Thank you Toyota for NOT giving us cylinder deactivation"

This tundrasolutions forum thread popped up in my Google alerts today, and I found it interesting to see how vehemently some people are opposed to fuel saving technology. And how some don't really even understand it.

Quote:
Thanks toyota for still giving us a V8 that runs on 8 cylinders!!!

i just rode in my buddies new 5.3L Sierra Crew and first thing he ever does is exhaust, on his way home from the dealer he had flowmasters and had it dumped ahead of the axle. oh my gosh. yeah it sounds great and fine and dandy till the dam thing decideds it wants to lose its balls and turn into a 4 cylinder...goes form V8 Rumble to a Ford Ranger with a fart can drone over and over and over.

he cant wait till he can get it tuned to disable that crap .

But rant off, just wanted to thank toyota for allowing us to have a full time V8 unlike DodgeFiat and Government Motors Corp.
From there, it progresses to a display of ignorance about how cylinder deactivation even works ("gimmick!" "marketing!"), to some balanced, reasoned responses, and is generally peppered with more than a few "HELL YEAH!"s.

I like:

Quote:
My friend has a Dodge, he calls the deactivation of cylinders "The Dodge problem". Every time 4 of his 8 cylinders go to sleep he steps on the throttle to wake them up again.

When I read "extreme" views like this, it reminds me how extreme many of our views are in the other direction. It's an interesting world we live in.

(Purposely not hyperlinked so this thread doesn't get into their logs as a source of clicks.)

It is a so true that truck drivers that drive them for "cruisers" have tiny man parts. It's 100% true.

OH, and FAIL for them thinking that pig of a truck they have is a "truck".

I've suspected this for quite some time - the fake testicles hanging off so many trailer hitches is a dead giveaway - though I've never been tempted to a close inspection :-)

Anyway, if all they're interested in is how the thing sounds, why not a good speaker and a microprocessor that inputs rpm & vehicle speed, and outputs the proper level of manly engine noise? Not my original idea, I hasten to add, but from C.M. Kornbluth's SF story, "The Marching Morons", published in the early '50s IIRC.
