What good and bad can you tell me about biodiesel ?
 

I'd like your advice on biodiesel.
First, what are the drawbacks ?

And then the good points.

I notice newer diesel vehicles apparently need Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
The trucks at work use this stuff.
How often is this stuff needed ?
It is expensive !
( And while I'm at it, I realize that the urea in DEF is now synthetic, but who in THE HELL thought of using urine to reduce emissions in diesels ?
Is it the same people that made Premarin for women from horse urine ?? )

So tell me some good and bad about diesels !

Enough bio diesel can never be made to replace regular diesel.
If you had your diesel full of 20% bio diesel when the big Texas freeze hit you would be totally screwed. You would need an artic style fuel heater system or your diesel is dead.
Absolutely avoid bio diesel inn the winter.

You can ome should delete those stupid and nearly pointless DEF systems.
If you live around Austin some crack head may delete the diesel particulate filter for you while you are sleeping one night. It's an elaborate scheme to burn a bunch more fuel to lower NOx, so if smog isn't a problem where you are delete it. It reduces soot but now all the soot it does produce is 2.5 nanometers and smaller so it's exceptionally bad for you, it's like bio weaponized diesel soot. At least those arse holes who "roll coal" are making diesel particulate matter that you can see, smell and your body's defenses can react to.
If you can do maths you can make your own DEF from urea. But I would bust out the sawsall and programmer.

I was surprised to see that Chevy makes a diesel car !
It's really looking interesting.
They even have a hatchback !
I must admit the name is a huge turn off : Cruze.
As in Ted Cruze ?
Or as in cruzing for male prostitutes ?

My first modification on the car would be to take off that cruze badge.

I had considered VWs diesels in the past, but it's good to see another maker in the US with a diesel.

Maybe I'm wrong to think this, but VW and Chevy worry me when it comes to reliability.

Long-term storage is the most critical aspect related to biodiesel, unless you blend it with some additive that prevents algae growth.

Biodiesel has lower specific BTU, so mileage goes down significantly. It is hydroscopic. The reason a lot of people buy it is because new low sulphur diesel buggers up engine components or they could make it for free OR in Cali it is a mandated smog reduce scheme.

Fuel system components on older Diesel engines had a higher nickel content, which reacted with sulphur on fuel acting as some sort of lube. Small amounts of biodiesel up to 7% are usually pointed out as lubrication additive.
