What have you done to improve your fuel econmy today?
A thread to give people daily motivation to continue to pursue even better milage.
I spent almost an hour on the phone talking to the guy that is going to be doing a custom cam shaft regrind for my 93 Festiva  |
Stayed home: Zero miles = zero fuel used.
|
x2 - worked from home, today.

Went to the shop that's attaching my underbody, and set up an appointment to pre set up the assembly date.
|
Made brake vent block-off plates for the T-Racer. Made the casino drive me out there and back with their Courtesy Shuttle. Didn't cause a single ignition event today! (The shuttle would have run whether I was on it or not.)
|
I just drove to the shop that charged me $185 for an hour of labor, plus parts and taxes. Now my door locks properly--when I drive.
|
Walking to the store to exchange a purchase.
|
I'll be drinking beer today, so no driving.

Drive less=Ride more!
On the bike whenever possible brings 'My miles' mpg up... |
Replaced smashed tail lights( prevents getting pulled over by the Po-lice= less stops), planned route to take care of whole weeks worth of errands in just one morning, made sure route went by "all you can eat buffet" so won't be hungry for supper( less groceries) and by the cheapest "off road diesel" I know of for some emergency fuel for the furnace( chance of snow tonight:mad:), changed front tires as the totally worn out ones could have caused hydroplaning or an accident( very bad mileage there), connected solar battery maintainer to car so the alternator doesn't work as hard, and called auto parts store to have the water pump I need delivered to my work place on Tuesday. I'll try harder tomorrow:D.

I bought a bike trailer for $10 off CL and proceeded to visit the recycling center using no gas at all! I think I will be heavily modifying this to be more cargo-friendly. I have some heavy duty wheels/tires and a couple disassembled wooden pallets...
http://www.ipernity.com/doc/304767/16793307 Also, rode my '63 Schwinn to work on Friday. After a few days of rainy drive-to-work weather, it was refreshing to cruise in style. Yesterday I walked a few hundred feet to the grocery store and brought my purchases home via a large US Army duffel/backpack. Honestly, the best thing I did was to get an apartment less than two miles from work, and two miles from basically anything I need. If I didn't go out to hang out with people there would be no reason to own a car. |
^You got it!
That's the set-up I made 24 years ago when I bought my house. Many many cold ICE starts and short commutes displaced by bicycle. |
Yeah, and the bonus is that because everything is close, it takes just a few minutes to get there.

for my subaru: i didn't improve my mileage but i did increase average speed without hurting average mpg. instead of cruising at 65mph (2700rpm), i cruised at 75mph (3000rpm). i guess my engine likes higher rpm (more ignition timing, oversquare design, bsfc sweetspot, more valve lift). from a dyno chart looks like the engine has been tuned for 3000-5000rpm. lack of torque below or above that engine speed, specially below 2.5k rpm.
|
Changed my 12 volt battery to two litium ones. Weight savings ~10 kg. Later in the evening will install my aerodynamic mirror covers on for the first time, if my new vacuum cleaner has enough suction...

Doesn't look half bad though. How about extending it to the rear ? Maybe foldable. Seems like the easiest solution to get a better balance when loading lots of stuff. Or find another one like it, put a hinge at the rear (and a plug between both shells to keep it from scraping at the rear) so you can fold the aft shell over the top of the other - instant weather protection ... |
Ran out of gas (CNG) because a reportedly opened station had no hardware whatsoever on site , so I had to go abroad (to the Netherlands) to find the nearest CNG pump !
Fortunately, you can get CNG of biological origin in Holland. |
Removed the PS pump on my s-10 after she blew apart yesterday on the highway. Still need a manual gearbox to make low speed driving easier, but its OK. Without doing an A-B-A test, it appears that I gained 1 to 2 mpg on my regular commute when I ran into town. Thinking some new LRR tires and a front end alignment will get me in the mid 30's more regularly.
|
Replaced my single piece air dam to a new two piece extending all the way across the front. It definitely needs reinforcing, though.
|
I put 2 brake pad drag reduction clips on both front brake assemblies :) I had them lying around so I figured so couldn't hurt :)
|
Pumped up! the tyres on the up!
Now running 2,7 bar (39 psi) - 0,1 bar over VW's suggested heavy load pressure. Dunno what pressure they were at, but the ride is quite a bit firmer now, it used to be a bit too mushy. The tyres are rated for 51 psi, so there's room for further increases - wear pattern allowing. |
took company truck to lunch instead.
|
I sold my XFi, so that someone else can improve thier fuel economy.
|
P&G to get 36 mpg in my tacoma:D
