What kind of mileage to expect from 2009 Fit ?

My mother just bought a 2009 Honda Fit sport automatic.

One of the things that convinced her to buy was that there was a kid there that mentioned that he had one and was getting 44 mpg highway.

I cringed when she told me it was not only automatic, but was the 'sport' edition and had extra large wheels and a spoiler.
I cringed even more when i saw the EPA mileage for the car ( 27 / 33 )

What are you guys getting with your Fits ?

EcoModder Fleet list - EcoModder.com

That list should give you an idea.

Cool thanks !

Edit :

Holy hell ! I had no idea these cars had such awful mileage.

Are they just geared poorly, or what ?

Any hope ?

The fit was unfortunately one of the better US cars in 2009 but that isn't saying much. I can get over 40 highway in mine with no overt hypermiling techniques but my daughter is only getting 33 lately on the winter gas and with idling and warm ups in cold weather. The automatic is rated 1 mpg higher than the stick and is easy to slide in and out of drive if you want to pulse and glide. Fuelly has a much bigger data base.

the fit is an awesome candidate for a boat tail.

it's already got an awesome windshield and hood angle, look at that thumbnail below. and that flat back is just crying for the nice boattail to finish the job. heck, with that kind of windscreen and hood slope, if you grabbed some chicken wire, spray foam and whatever else you'd need, I'll bet you would end up with a cd of .22-.24 -better then the prius.

you will probably get a lot of stares and questions tho.

Mom just called and we did the math.
With combined city stop and go and highway, she achieved 36.37 MPG

Cool !

She says the gauge has helped her to drive better.

Does anyone know the Cd of the 2009 Fit ?
I found the first generation Cd figure - GASP !
point thirty six !
There are pickup trucks with Cd figures better than that !
What has Honda done to the car to make the drag so poor on the first generation ?
I certainly hope the second is better !

( The Ford Lightning pickup for instance has a .36 Cd as well )

Not my car. My mother would never allow something like that on her car.:p

The Fit has excellent aerodynamics ---going backwards. I lined it up to the template backwards and it FIT really well. I'll update this post later with the image.

Don't forget Cd doesn't tell you the actual drag. You have to multiply that by the frontal area. This is not well publicized in the car world as a way of making you feel good about buying that new sport ute that gets 23mpg because it has a Cd of .30 which you must then multiply times a barn door. My motorcycle with me on it has a Cd of about .60 but the frontal area is much smaller so I am able to get 87mpgUS due to a much lower Cd times Area.

Yes, and the Fit is a very tall car. So, already it has that going against it.
Lots of frontal area.

The fit is in that group of cars like the the Fiesta, Yaris, Mazda 2/3, and so on. Just timing lights and lifting off the pedal a little while doing suburban driving will go a long way ... but they just arent made to go faster than 50 with good mileage.

vskid3 02-10-2012 07:37 AM

He gets 44MPG highway with the exact same car. I don't think the spoiler hurts economy on the Fit, and makes it look much better in my opinion.

Actually I do hope the Cd on the second generation is as high as the first.
Think of the potential with drag reduction !
