What mpg can I expect from an 05 corolla?

pretty base, ce, 5sp.
Light careful low rpm driving without any pulse n glide. Just basic easy eco minded driving. Low 40s?

mpg_numbers_guy 03-08-2018 01:06 PM

It looks like you're getting over 40 MPG with your Saturn and Pontiac; a Toyota Corolla should get better gas mileage than those two, if similarly driven and similarly ecomodded.

davelobi 03-08-2018 02:11 PM

Ya, those were a while ago. I come n go with eco/hyper driving. Hag nothing but a suburban for a while, never even checked. The corolla has the same exact engine and 5 speed as the vibe (same assembly line) so I expect simular results. I did break 50 once in the Saturn so I can pull the numbers if I want too bad enough.

I won't be running higher tire pressure or even trying hard until spring or summer (so cold and winter gas) with the corolla. Just will drive easy but won't be able to help myself from checking mileage.

mpg_numbers_guy 03-08-2018 02:50 PM

The Corolla weighs almost 200 pounds less and has a 0.30 drag coefficient versus the 0.33 drag of the Vibe, so it should better if driven the same.

Why not inflate the tires though? Just a few PSI can increase the MPG without making that much of a difference in ride quality.

MetroMPG 03-08-2018 06:47 PM

What's EPA for that car...

City MPG: 28
Highway MPG: 37
31 combined

Gotcha, I totally get the inflated tires thing. Right now I'm still knee deep in snow on my long driveway so the normal tire pressure adds a little more grip. Thanks for the weight and cd numbers. Summer gas, hard tires, and warmer weather (much quicker into closed loop) should provide for much better than those epa mileage ratings.

For sure. With that and either a Scangauge or Torque app you should have no problems easily beating the EPA numbers.

I'm pretty sure the right answer is 42. Don't panic.

Should we take up a betting pool? Put me down for 35! ;)

Aww, I'm I little insulted.
Actually, I have almost 200 miles on the first full tank because I drove to an auction today that was like 65 miles each way. Probably killed this tank tho because it was all freeway. I tried to keep her down around 60 but found myself up to 70 often. Trying to re-learn is going to take time. Maybe I can sneak in a little key off coasting to gain back a couple precious miles from that highway blast.

Let the bets roll in! I'm going optimistic at 43. I know that's a stretch with sub freezing temps and winter formulation gas but I need the goal.

MetroMPG 03-10-2018 05:15 PM

Put an MPG gauge in it to help you manage your speed. :)

It's just been a couple years since I've bothered hypermiling. From past experience the freeway speed and air resistance/ drag kills me. Should have found a semi to follow. I, like everyone else likely, love those long back country roads where I can pull a bunch of easy 45 mph miles. I'll see if I can get another 150 miles on this tank in the next couple of days. I have a couple more freeway trips mercy week also so I'll likely run thru a couple more full tanks in the next week.

I'll report in

MetroMPG 03-10-2018 06:12 PM

38!

I feel like the loser, a little disappointed that's all. Checked a short tank and numbers came up 38.39 mpg.

Checked tires just before fill up and they were between 31 and 32! Now all sitting at 45. Still mighty cold outside and winter formulation gas. I do a killer half mile cold start run twice a day for young daughters bus stop. That stinks but won't go away. I'll see if I can break the 40 mark on this next tank.

I'll bet you go up to 42 with the increased tire pressure.

MetroMPG 03-12-2018 09:30 AM

Start modding!

1) Partial grille block
2) Instrumentation (you'll have to use an MPGuino or similar since it's pre-OBD-II... or a vac gauge)
3) ...

it's obd-ll, 2005 corolla.
Probably just run next tank with tires.
Likely add air dam and maybe some grill blocking soon tho. I am missing a fog light delete cover (that is ordered) from previous to me front bumper hit. For now the cracked bumper is repaired with duct tape.

LeanBurn 03-12-2018 11:10 AM

Do:
-upper grill block- I have been running this way for many years, no issues,
then do:
-a front belly pan of coroplast from the 'chin' of the front bumper/lower grill to the radiator support so the air that comes in from the lower grill is forced through the radiator and not bouncing off of it creating a lot of turbulence in the front of the car in front of the front wheels.

44.2657mpg ! (5.72 gal/253.2 miles)
Not bad with below freezing temps and winter formulation gas. Went from 32psi to 45 psi in the tires. Lots of freeway and held her under 60mph. It's all coming back to me. Old brain had to re-learn a few things.

MetroMPG 03-14-2018 02:01 PM

How fast were you driving on the last tank?

Both had a lot of freeway, did 250 miles in two days. First tank saw a lot of 65mph and even 70 by accident a couple of times. Sure makes a big difference. Way back in my old CRX I got a 67mpg tank that was almost exclusively 45mph.

mpg_numbers_guy 03-14-2018 04:41 PM

Good numbers! Is that with no mods except extra air in the tires?

Correct. Just modifying driving habits. That's a little eoc and dfco, not much tho. I did, just now, install the plastic (was missing) fog light block out. Was kind of a little air catching scoop but couldn't be much. That's likely close to the best I'll get out of her without summer gas and warm weather.

MetroMPG 03-14-2018 07:00 PM

Not going to do a partial grille block? Fast & effective.

Passenger side mirror-ectomy / relocate to inside? Another quick job.

davelobi 03-14-2018 07:06 PM

grill block would be good and might happen but..
I've never had it over 2k rpm except in 5th gear. My son will probably take it over before I do any mods (I have a air dam waiting for it also). Then the poor car will never be under 3k rpm. I'm looking for a truck and have a project ctsv in the garage.

jcp123 03-14-2018 07:40 PM

Ooh, CTS-V. Nice!

Numbers look good. Very consistent with my automatic Echo and my stick Civic (still getting the latter sorted). Really about what I'd expect.

Didn't look like much of an accident for insurance company to total it until I dug in. Entire dash out, removing radiator support to replace. Learning a lot. Dah back in and totally functional. I'll have her done in the next month. 400hp LS6, 6 speed tremec and rwd, should be fun. Far end of eco driving spectrum off course but I'm over 50 and just sold my GSXR so you know I have a need for speed as well as enjoy beating my best in high fuel economy. My wife hates both.

Eek! I guess that's the chance you take with something like that...

My wife cannot STAND my driving. The display in her van rats her out: 13.6mpg avg when I last checked.

Gotta love those fuel gauges that sit on full for a hundred miles. 151 miles on this tank and just getting to where it starts dropping faster.

edit: forgot to add, this should be a good run. Lots of 45mph steady cruising on back roads. Took the longer slow way today to avoid the freeway on about a hundred mile trip. Probably fill n check tomorrow.

Yep, well plus, to do it right, I've removed the radiator support and will be welding a new one back in. Airbags make for mighty expensive repairs. This one required replacing the dash, air bags, seat belt pre-tensioners (which deploy like an airbag to tighten seat belt), windshield, hood, bumper cover, crash bar behind bumper, bumper shocks, grills, headlight, hood release, crash sensor, airbag module, etc etc. Some parts common with cts but the ctsv specific parts are low production and much more expensive. Plus, lots and lots of hours of labor. Easier to see now why it doesn't look like much but gets totaled.

davelobi 03-17-2018 09:47 AM

45.34.
that's great but I actually expected a little better on that yank. I'd say kinda peaking without mods and summer.
If I still have it with warm weather, summer gas, grill block n air dam, and some thinner synthetic oil, I'd bet a donut I can see 50.
