what transmission is best for 96 civic hx for highway driving?

Im sorry if im repeating other threads but Ive been looking around the boards for awhile and havent seen anything about it. So the deal is that I have a 96 civic hx. Not to long ago my transmission went bad and one of my honda "expert" friends got me another one for $350 not sure what its from but I hate the gearing in it! I have been reading about honda transmission and it looks like the HF would have the best gearing but Im pretty sure that since its cable and mine is hydralic I wouldnt be able to make it work. The second best seems to be putting in a vx transmission. What are my options? Would it be feasible to get custom gears or final drive in the one I have right now? Should I find an HX trans? Vx?

I'd be looking for an HX transmission for sure. The other "economy oriented" transmissions you mention, HF and VX, are from different generations, so I don't think it'd be an easy install (could be wrong). But the HX one has good ratios, and I think you should try to find another!

The HF tranny can be installed, but you'll have to switch to cable clutch, which isn't altogether hard. You could also re-clock the arm, twist it, cut off the excess, and then use the original slave cylinder on a custom bracket to push it, if that would make your life easier.

The VX should be a direct bolt-in, with maybe new mounts. IIRC, they didn't change the mounts too much... left them in the same places, I think.

what do you think it would be like to drive with that transmission "HF"? Do you think it would improve gas mileage enough to go through the effort, and about the vx.. do you think its better than hx trans?

another question.. what is reclocking the arm?

For a direct bolt-on, the 5th-gen (92-95) VX and CX transmission will give you the best gear ratios. 2nd best is the HX you originally had.

Unbolt the arm and turn it so that when it's bolted on, it's pointing at a different location on the clock.

Nope, not compared to the stock transmission. Some gain, most likely. Enough to go through the effort? Not to my way of thinking.

Can we just make all the parallel parking spots in cities smaller? So you can't reasonably fit anything more than a mid-size sedan in them, I mean. Leave the garages open for trucks, though... if you drive a truck in the city, you create congestion, and you have to pay for parking... :P
