What's the deal with box springs?!
 

There's a box, but no spring!

Yet many times people have told me "It's called a box spring."
"It's just a box."
"It's called a box spring."
"Why do we hang out?"

Mom bought my brother a new bed. They threw in a "box spring" for $10. They actually use that term, but the "mattress expert" said it was a foundation.
Like concrete!

We have too much stuff and I really think we have a better use for 18.75 cubic feet, why not purchase a frame twice as high, ditch the pretender, and store something bigger than this underneath:http://ecomodder.com/forum/attachmen...1&d=1504997913

It's all mattress now, years ago there were box springs that had springs. We bought 4" spacers for under the frame wheels and the underbed storage boxes fit.

All I know about it is that I'm not going to buy another box-frame bed, since they have no advantage at all. Unless you'd consider being easier for small pets to climb as a noticeable advantage.

How easily did those go into place?

Dad had Home Depot cut up a board, he glued them together, and had me position them, which was surprisingly frustrating.

The next time I visited, he had taken them out, and glued all of them together.

That was a good use of my time...

I suggested putting extensions between the frame and wheels, but she pointed out he tends to bounce in his bed.

He is autistic.

Still, why buy a giant spacer?

Dunno. People need something to lay the mattress on. A lot of bed frames don't have support, except around the edges.

We just replaced our bed. We didn't want it 4 feet off the ground (exaggeration) so I put a bunch of 2x6s down and we went without a box spring. Cheaper and stronger. It's knee high....which is just right, if you ask me.

Four feet high?! Mine was six for four years! I have a great plan for something high enough to store my tough boxes, but not put me too close to the ceiling fan.

My plans always wait on money...

My sister in law uses pallets. Good idea? Bad? Dunno. It's actually not a terrible look, at least.

Wife and I skipped the "box spring" that Select Comfort offered. Instead I used plywood over the regular box spring. Ghetto sure but the OE foundation was a bit ridiculous.

I built a platform bed for $50 in lumber and $50 metal brackets. I felt quite proud of it, but replaced my full-size bed with a twin XL, used the metal frame, pulled off the casters, and set it on foot lengths of .75" pipe and flange ends. It wobbles a bit, so it would not be ideal for my brother, but I have my giant rolling duffel bags under my bed, which beats dust bunnies and real ones.

Mom is complaining that her pillow-top queen is too soft and hurts her back. She had me cut up a piece of plywood to put on top of her box spring.

You can probably buy a nice bed frame for $50 on CL or other. My wife just made me buy some brand name hardwood bedroom set for something like $1,000, used. I didn't know a headboard could be so heavy. Took me and another guy huffing and puffing to get it loaded onto my trailer. One of the 2 tie-down straps broke on I-5 due to the harmonic vibration in the strap and rubbing on the wood. Somehow the straps stayed on the trailer and I was able to tie them back together and continue on.

This morning we received our king mattress in a box. Coil mattress with a layer of memory foam... same $333 price delivered. I wanted to find a regular used mattress since they can be had from free to $50. Oh well, this one seems like it will probably work fine.

I prefer beds to be up high, the higher the better. This new frame is too low to get much under the bed for storage, and it's too heavy and nice looking to build a janky platform. I want a boxspring, but those seem not popular now, and I'm not sure I could navigate the corners to get it in the room anyhow.

Between every time the strap crosses a corner, give it half a twist. This twist will break up the harmonics and greatly reduce vibration. It's an old truckers trick, and it makes an incredible difference.
