Wheel,not rim
The metal circle in inside of the tire is a "wheel," not a "rim." The "rim" is the outer edge of the wheel. I do not know why it aggravates me so to hear people call wheels "rims," but it does.

The lovely thing about English is that even if it may not be technical, everyone gets it :)
With bicycles it makes more sense to make the distinction, but that is because there is more of a structural separation between the spokes and the rim. :) |
But not everyone understands. If you call a wheel repair shop and say, "My rim is damaged," 10 to 1 they will ask you to specify what you mean.

In my experience it is the wheel people who know the most crazy words for their wheels :p
I guess I don't think about it much |

I used to call them rims, but I "figured it out". At the same time, I don't like the term "wheel" either, I think the noun is too vague for cars. Wheel is used for too many other things, like wagon wheels and cartwheels. It just doesn't feel right. CarloSW2 |
Let's start calling them, "the metal circle that is inside of the tire."
|
I think we should call them socks, since we call tires shoes :p

People erroneously call engines "motors" all the time.
People call the wheel 'n' tire assembly "wheels" all the time too. Carlos, here's some buggy wheels- er... rims- for ya! 2009 Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Concept http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r..._Roadster_.jpg http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...l_Roadst-1.jpg |

Ha ha, what's old is new again. I call engines motors too, so I'll keep that in mind. CarloSW2 |
