Wheel Well Fender Flaps in Front of Rear Tire (04 Civic)
I was inspired by the recent post regarding edges being useful in new aero designs. One of the comments by the GM guy regarded a flap in front of the back tire on the Chevy Traverse. I found a good pic of it here.
http://i51.tinypic.com/2mgs83l.jpg and Zoomed in.... http://i52.tinypic.com/hwmnud.jpg This got me to wondering about my 04 Civic back tire... http://i53.tinypic.com/32zj9tv.jpg I was thinking of doing this.... http://i55.tinypic.com/oa29lc.jpg I would just use some vinyl edging or something to extend it out a few inches and drop it down a bit making it the width of the tire and 2 -3 inches lower than the frame rail. I would use some sorta plastic fasteners to attach it, cause if I use metal screws, and the thing gets torn off somehow, there is about a 110% chance it will end up giving me a flat tire. Crazy enough to work? |
Crazy (read inexpensive) enough to try.

You'll see these small air deflectors on loads of new cars BTW.
Any air you can deflect away from a tyre is a (minor) gain. Put them at a slight angle. |
Get some cheap mudflaps and stick 'em on the "wrong" side...
funny how we say to take 'em off if they are mounted where they're supposed to be. |

Just as a comparison, you might want to look at what Fuji did with the '86 Subaru XT.

Porsche Cayman has also nice curvy flaps before rear tires. This is the best picture I could find, but that "lies" little about the angles used.
