When was the Golden Age of Ecomodding?

What has been your favorite project? I think one of the most dedicated was 3wheeler's 4-wheel Insight undertray and boat tail, but Metro has done some great work.

It is usually just cardboard and garbage bags, though! :D

The Aerocivic is amazing aerodynamically.

Of course, 3wheeler and Basjoos gave away they creations.

Phil has done great work.

Who is aerohead's rival and has he modified anything?

I was rereading Christofoo's cargo box thread, but apparently it failed so spectacularly he fled the country.

You can ecomod in any country, Christofoo!

My phone refuses to leave his name alone.

Balto did some good work, as did HydroJim, but almost everyone leaves sooner or later.

I'm looking at you, Old Mech!

Unfortunately, Pedro passed away.

What have been your favorite projects, and when were they made?

redpoint5 07-06-2022 03:33 PM

Airing up my tires 5 PSI over door-sill recommendation. Most bang for the buck.

I've enjoyed experimenting with supercap battery replacement paired with LiFePO4.

For me it was 09-14-2013, 11:55 AM.

FreeBeard was right...what would we do if the MPG goes up!?!?
Thanks FreeBeard! I just returned home from a 770 mile round trip to Portland, lake Oswego and home! I returned home late last night and checked the hard mileage and found 770 miles, 15.6 gallons netted 49.3MPG! So as Freebeard suggested, what will we do if the mileage goes up?!?
Beetle w/o any attachments/slick top= ave 48mpg :{)
Beetle with factory VW Roof racks and CVT tent= 38mpg :/
Beetle with new areo-hitch mounted rack/CVT tent= 49.3MPG WhoooRah!
That is a gain of 11.3 mpg boys and girls!
I didn't even mind the intercaps. He did all the work and I got to be right.

Xist 07-06-2022 04:53 PM

Intercaps?! What about the Precaps?!

redpoint5 07-06-2022 04:58 PM

I've been scolded over the caps thing before. Also hard to untrain the musclememory that types Freebird despite the mind knowing it's not right.

Probably incapable of typing freebird now without paying very careful attention.

Xist 07-06-2022 05:01 PM

When I was in eighth grade I took a keyboarding class where I was forced to type misspellings.

It was agonizing! :)

It is aggravating to type up someone else's lazy English.

Sometimes I correct it and don't tell anyone! :D

Ecomodding and hypermiling was more of a thing 2006-2013

Which also coincides with diyelectriccars peak project time

Xist 07-06-2022 06:13 PM

I joined on 06-20-2012. Go figure I joined a good thing as it was already declining.

I did the same thing with bulletin board systems.

I missed a great deal of fun.

Maybe I would have been invited to a LAN party! :)

redpoint5 07-06-2022 06:14 PM

Yeah, my next major ecomod is to get an EV or PHEV. No plans to mod whatever I get unless there's some very low hanging fruit. Still like the idea of a cargo box lightly modded to improve aero. That's something that can easily move between vehicles, although I change vehicles so infrequently.

I'm still driving all the same vehicles I was when I joined in 2010.

The biggest fuel saver has been the issuance of a company vehicle and a job that is mostly work from home.

Really the next vehicle I'd like is a powered paraglider. My question is, should I go petrol, or electric?

The golden age was June 11 2019 at exactly 8:42 am.

Electric is much quieter soaring in the air which means you're enjoying much more. Gas means you can take longer trips and do more sight seeing but that engine can be pretty loud.

I've mellowed out somewhat. :)

I still copy and paste CrippleRooster.

Soaring generally indicates power off mode utilizing thermal energy. The longest flights so far are in excess of 1000 km, but it is a time thing not a result of anything else except lack of daylight. I believe Maj. Payne did 1500 km@160 kts in the mountain wave couple years back.

I'm always on the "What's new" page, so I never see those stats.

The interesting thing to me was ~600,000 posts. Xist, freebeard, and Aerohead probably account for half of those. :p

New answer "Before yesterday...."

www.zerohedge.com: From Today, All New Vehicles In The EU Will Have Surveillance Black Boxes
Quote:

Authored by Paul Joseph Watson via Summit News,

From today, all new vehicles sold in the EU will have mandatory black boxes fitted that record technical data and will be accessible by authorities, greasing the skids for surveillance-powered speed limiting technology.
Anything manufactured in EU for export will have this technology at least stubbed in.

redpoint5 07-08-2022 12:41 AM

No worries, mods will utilize those features for advanced usage.

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr 07-08-2022 01:15 AM

I remember joining in 2012, when I found out someone in France quoted one thing I wrote about Atkinson-cycle engines.

freebeard 07-08-2022 01:48 AM

redpoint5 -- My thought was Tesla's GigaBerlin plant. It sounds like what Teslas already do anyway.
