Wildest time attack track aero design

An Australian racing shop, PR Technology has created a specialized Porsche race car, the RP 968. It is specially built for the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge. The vehicle must be recognizable from a vehicle manufacturer but in the Open class allows complete freedom in terms of aerodynamics. It has somewhat a Porsche 968-look but almost every part and surface was scuplted to produce extreme downforce and to help in engine performance. The original 3L 4-cylinder was melded with a huge turbo to create 700-900 hp. The computer-optimized aerodynamics has shaped a race car that is longer and wider with a sinister dorsal fin that terminates to a yuuuge rear wing. At the front is an outrageous 'bulldozer plow' splitter. The black magic of hidden inlets and outlets optimize engine breathing and cooling. A carefully detailed belly and rear diffuser help suck the car down to the track. Suspension hardware are also carefully tucked away of the bottom aero. Wild aerodynamic ideas.

It's a nice quality build. This picture tells the story:

Pretty Cool!!!

The big carbon fiber pieces at the front and rear are amazing, as are the aero suspension arms.

The front wheel treatment is interesting. At a glance, I wouldn't think that having that upwardly sloped surface behind the top of the wheel would be effective, since how is the air going to get around the tire? Also they chose to have nothing behind the front wheels near the ground, which is interesting.

The cars normally seen in this forum are all about low drag not high down-force, although my own pickup truck features both.

Delving into the taboo of race cars and down force, I can at least appreciate the way the air is provided a clean release edge at the aft section.

FYI: I went ahead an posted a few images in an online Porsche parts supply resource forum.

Here is the section of that forum which deals with Autocross and Track racing:

Could you please post a side view of the project so that we can do an aero-template overlay?

“Over 300 iterations have been tested on the bodywork using CFD to achieve, what we hope, will be a very competetive aerodynamic package.
Could we see a few of the CFD images if they have been published before?

Race car motorsports encourage and pioneer many new engineering ideas and technologies that becomes readily applied to every mass-produced vehicle we drive. From the first rear-view mirror, DOC engines, automatic transmissions, variable electronic control, disc brakes, tire technologies, multi-link suspensions, ABS, traction control, carbon fiber, DSG gearboxes, biofuels, push button ignition, passive and active aerodynamics, driver safety equipment, etc. came from race car experimentation, prototyping and race application. Serious race car aerodynamics study began in the 30's, Wunilbald Kamm's prototype race car (drag coefficient of only 0.25, BMW 328 Kamm Coupe) studies are applied to today's tall greenhouse SUV/CUV/minivan vehicles. These racing examples may be extreme but some effective lessons they learn are shared in future vehicle designs.

Thank you for the bit of a history lesson. Know the name Kamm for sure.

I completely agree.

My earlier notations were meant as a heads-up on this forum's past reception of racing vehicles. Just a little negative at times but no lynching occurred.;)

With over one thousand posts I guess you didn't need any warning.

mca s13

the MCA S13 nissan Time Attack car is one of the wildest designs that still looks like a normal car that as been modified:

http://www.worldtimeattack.com/wp-co...88-567x318.jpg

look at that diffuser!

http://www.gripshiftslide.com/photos/s13_mca.jpg

this car was extremely competitive in 2012-14, taking some of the fastest laps for a RWD and overall time attack cars.
here is a build article showing some of the construction:
Nerd's Eye View: The MCA Suspensions "Hammerhead" Silvia S13

there is no reason why much of this sort of construction couldn't be replicated with low cost materials, but aimed at ECO rather than Downforce

V2 looks like this:

http://www.excitementcarmagazine.com.../10/MCA_03.jpg

the NEMO evo is one of the fastest as well.

in 2012 I think(?) the MCA s13 only had about 500 horsepower to the wheels. a far cry from some of the monsters that are out now with 800-1000+ and All Wheel Drive like the NEMO evo.

only about 8 ago the cyber evo was nearly unstoppable and considered insanely crazy:
http://speedhunters-wp-production.s3...00/504img3.jpg

http://speedhunters-wp-production.s3...12/504img4.jpg

speedhunters referred to this as extensive bodywork and huge lips and canards hah!

little did they know that people were going to create low flying bi-planes with 4 wheel drive in the near future.

Time attack racing is crazy, and it shows us a lot about how crazy we can go in the search of specific goals. Many of us don't have the tools or money to build crazy stuff. But I hope that we do try to think hard and be bold in our quest to achieve better efficiency in our cars because it does make a difference.

Talk to your friends and neighbors about your projects, share and spread the word. Many of the mods you do are easy and simple and the gains are easy to see.
