Winter mpg

Ok so that's the salt is out here now I have put the vx away. Winter plans for it. The cx that I always got 42-43 mpg worst tank ever was 38-39. Well I got a tank that was 34. Ok no panic I had to commutes to work in blizzardlike conditions. I also was stuck in an accident for 45 min with the engine idling. Hey its like 20deg and I gotta work out in it all day. So I thought that was it well next tank same thing 34-35. I checked tire pressure I checked for dragging brakes I'm going to do cap and rotor as they are flakey looking. I've just never tracked every tank like I have been lately. It just seems like a large drop in winter I know 2-3 wouldn't surprise me but 7-8 seems high.

Look at my sig line for average summer and winter mileage. The difference is mostly caused by temperature.

MetroMPG 01-01-2013 01:36 PM

Yup. Horrid MPG is just another one of the many services winter offers!

that's actually a nice list.... i may have to reference it more often when i explain on other forums why their winter MPGs drop.

mcrews 01-01-2013 07:02 PM

wHILE i DO EXPERIENCE SOME WINTER DROP OFF, mine tends to be the gas mix because, I live in areas that dont have extreme low temps and bad weather.
Since the Q45 had automatic air/heat, I tend to run a/c all the time in the summer and very little in the winter. So I get some trade off there. (my summer mpg isnt as high as it could be)

BHarvey 01-02-2013 07:35 PM

Trips to/from work
95f- 45-46 mpg
35f- 35-36 mpg

Yes, winter SUCKS!

GRU 01-02-2013 08:20 PM

Yup..trips to work summer 38mpg and now 32mpg and thats with my car being garaged so the engine is much warmer

Rusty94cx 01-02-2013 11:36 PM

My driver car is always garages also Well I went to put new cap and rotor on car while test driving she's dead. No spark. Man I love having to get all the neighbors to help get the car uphill 300 foot driveway covered in ice and snow. And I can't push it into the garage. I beg to differ with the list in regards to cold tires more resistance. Hot tires sticks sticky well sticky. Witch rolls better a sticky ball or a hard ball? But now I got a dead cx...:(. Trying to find test specs for the dizzy igniter and coil.

I get 23 without much trouble in the summer, now I'm stuck at 19. It's rather depressing.

roosterk0031 01-03-2013 12:21 PM

Worst tank ever today with the Cobalt 36.75 mpg.

YeahPete 01-03-2013 12:57 PM

Winter is killing me. I think I got like 36 last fillup. .I'm too scared to compute it because I know it was HORRID! I had to let some air out of tires because I needed additional grip for the blizzard. I've been too lazy to put the air back in :/

Rusty94cx 01-03-2013 10:40 PM

Well good I don't feel so bad I drove the vx last couple of days we'll se how it did. The cx was down. No start no spark. Put a dizzy in and yeah all better now. I hope new life will help with a few mpgs. The cap and rotor was shot and I'm assuming I had a weak in efficient spark fingers crossed.

Rusty94cx 01-07-2013 07:11 PM

Well new used distributer cap and rotor and wires all or and all very new looking for 30-40$. Good junkyard score. And last tank 36 so little happier. She's so ugly I don't want to spend any energy on the cx.

Yup, it seems counterintuitive. But from the mouth of the Michelin Man himself ...

Ummmmm with the weather in my part of the world my mpg figures are better than summer. my weather can change hour by hour strong winds temps from 3c to 9c then add on wind chill factor and amount of rain and how much water on the roads/streams. Roll on summer to see if my mpg goes up. i have carried out a lot of service items before winter. so was in good running order. only radical change has been a front air dam since winter arrived. will hope to carry out more mods when spring arrives and been declared fit after shoulder op to remove some bone on cavical plate to restore full movement in my arm. gives me time to do some research and buy items to crack on with mods both mechical and aero.

While it is true that a hard plastic wheel rolls easier than a wheel with a soft rubber tire, you are looking at different materials, one of which has a miniscule contact patch and the other which has a much larger contact patch.

The drop in a tire's rolling resistance with increasing temp is likely a result of warm rubber flexing easier than cold stiff rubber. The rubber has to flex to accommodate the flat contact patch and the easier it flexes, the lower the rolling resistance. Also as the tire heats up, its internal psi also increases, reducing the size of the contact patch.

chefdave 01-04-2014 06:17 AM

Basjoos
that will explain why winter tyres are good below 7c and summer tyres are better above 7c. also as temp drops psi drops as well. as weather temp goes up and down is another reason to check tyre pressures i have seen a drop as high as 5psi per tyre.

arcosine 01-06-2014 01:41 PM

At -15F my intake was at 50F after a 10 mile drive to work, engine warmed up to 183F. Tire pressure is down 3 psi from 44psi@20F. Engine temp was at 15F when started. Avg mpg down 1 mpg to 43.5.
