Good for you!

bennelson 01-06-2011 07:14 PM

I'm still waiting for the prize.

Originally, my understanding was that it was for a $5000 credit for Craftsman items, but it looks like it will actually be a Sears Gift Card.

I checked, and a Sears card is good at Sears, K-Mart, and Lands End.

Still not sure exactly what I will do with it.

What I really want is 5 grand in lithium batteries, electric motors, battery chargers, solar panels, LED arrays.......

I'm going to have to triple-check all the fine print before I do anything!

Weather Spotter 01-06-2011 07:17 PM

you might be able to sell the gift card, or trade it on one of the online sites. Both options can give you cash at the rate of 80-90% of face value.

SVOboy 01-06-2011 09:23 PM

Congrats! Definitely well earned

Awesome ben! I'm sure you'll spend it on more eco stuff for sure. Talk about a return on investment!

Wonder how many AA Lithium batteries you could get for 5K ? Isn't that how Tesla motors burried all those kwh around the car.

Just imagine the look of the checkout person when they look in your cart !

NeilBlanchard 01-06-2011 10:39 PM

Good idea Jason! You got me thinking:

You could buy a bunch of electric lawn mowers, and leaf vacuums, and chain saws, etc. and donate them to all the local veterans and retired folks? These use a fraction of the energy of most ICE powered -- and no gasoline or oil from foreign countries will be used...

Weather Spotter 01-06-2011 10:46 PM

If you could get RC batteries at sears, order about 2500 of them to use as a new car battery. Make another instructibles on it and see what sort of responce you get.

Congratulations...:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Nice job.

Hee hee. All of the Google ads on this thread right now are for Sears!

I did just get a shipping notification from INSTRUCTABLES that my prize is on the way!

My wife said she thought it would be funny if it showed up as a giant check. I assured her that it would be a card and a t-shirt.

Weather Spotter 01-06-2011 11:48 PM

Ads, what ads?
members do not see them + I run add block plus so they are gone for good :)

You should be clicking on random ones to support the site.

In the interest of full disclosure I run add block too.

Weather Spotter 01-07-2011 12:10 AM

Will not click on ads. I got a red star, aka I paid to help the site.

That's my thought too. Plus, I actually think that advertising is a very interesting art/science when it's done right.

I have a star too. It just happens to be green. It means I WORK for my membership.

Weather Spotter 01-07-2011 12:20 AM

You could say I work for mine, I moderate the wiki but they do not want to give me a nice green star.

$5000 worth of tools.
I imagine that by this time next year you'll be zipping around in the Bennelson Supersport Hybrid; driven by a hundred cordless drills and a couple of chainsaws. :P

bennelson 01-07-2011 12:41 PM

Hmmm....

A chainsaw/drill battery hybrid motorcycle......

Nevyn 01-07-2011 12:58 PM

Yeah, that's a thought. Those Lithium drill paks are pretty hefty for rating, aren't they? I bet you could get a discount if you bought....250 of them.

"Hi, Sears? Yes, I'd like to order TWO PALLETS of cordless drills..."

Or, you could buy a BRAND NEW set of batteries for the Electro-Metro, and still have some left over!

Angmaar 01-07-2011 06:41 PM

Congrats on winning!

brucepick 01-07-2011 08:52 PM

Congrats! Way cool, as they say.

gone-ot 01-07-2011 10:56 PM

...Congratulations!

...and, FWIW, Sears "owns" K-Mart (and Lands-End, too, I think).

bennelson 01-08-2011 09:07 PM

I got my "prize pack" from Instructables today; a t-shirt, 3 stickers, 2 sew-on patches, and a tiny plastic robot!

Still not sure when the GRAND PRIZE will show up. I expect that may be coming directly from Sears corporate.

I did stop at the Sears store today, just to get ideas.
There was a stainless steel toolbox there that was very shiny, and may have my name on it.

There's also a Sears Auto Center in a separate building out in the parking lot of the mall. I wonder if they have aluminum rims for a Geo Metro?

Seriously though, the Die Hard Platinum sounds like a pretty nice AGM battery. One issue that I have had with the original batteries I have in the Electro-Metro is that they are A LITTLE TOO LONG. In other Metro conversions, people fit 4 batteries longitudinally in the radiator area. Mine don't fit! I can only fit two there (and the other one only goes in and out by removing the head light!)

If I got 4 Die Hard Platinums, I could replace the one front battery with those four, increasing my system voltage from 72 to 108 volts. I would then charge those on a 48V charger and keep my original charger (which is still on the fritz right now....) for the back batteries.
