The Mazda2, a slick little subcompact sold in Europe and Asia, is coming to Canada, confirmed Mazda Motor Corporation president and CEO Takashi Yamanouchi.

“I've just decided,” said Yamanouchi, a 42-year veteran of Mazda who assumed the top job last November.
Now the big question is what engine choice(s) we'll get. Mazda is among the rare automakers that sometimes gives North American consumers a choice in engine sizes in its small cars. (I believe the Mazda 3 has several engine options).

I'm sure the Ford Fiesta, based on the Mazda 2 platform, will only come with one (relatively thirsty) engine.

The Globe and Mail is the first news outlet to confirm that the Mazda2 will join Mazda Canada' lineup. The announcement was not part of formal Yamanouchi's formal remarks during press days for the New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Centre.

Hope it also makes it a little further south. The 3 comes with an engine choice on the sedan—2.0 or 2.3 (2.5 for 2010). Hatchback only comes with the 2.3/2.5. The 2 only weighs a little over 2k lbs. and would be killer with a 2.0! A smaller engine as an option would be nice, as well.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. Looks like he fired it off from his Blackberry after a few refreshments in the hospitality suite. :)

The lightness is one of the things I like about it too. Mazda seems serious about trimming the fat off its cars.

Hmm. There's only 1 engine choice in Australia for the 2: 1.5L, rated at 6.4L/100 km or 37 mpg (US) combined. (On whatever test cycle they have - who knows.)

In the U.K., it's offered with 3 gasoline engines and 1 diesel. The diesel is rated at 57 mpg (US) combined (on whatever their test cycle is).

I'm excited about the Mazda 2 with the 1.4 liter diesel. It's about time someone other than VW sold diesels in North America.
