Working from home.
Would some of you post the types of work you do from home ? I'm not trying to take your jobs, just very curious what can be done away from the "job" location. Thanks

IT services for a medical device company.
I remotely access client systems to upgrade/troubleshoot/install software. 5% of my job requires travel, which is anytime I need physical access to the machine, it cannot be reached remotely, or the task is too complex to efficiently complete remotely. I'd love to work remotely from Costa Rica. |
I'm working part time as a mechanical engineer.

I'm in finance (but can be repurposed as a ML software engineer), so I can do everything from home easily, but I actually like going to the office.
I'm an extrovert so it's nice having coworkers around to talk to, eat lunch with, etc. In-person communication is also a lot more efficient than Zoom, especially sharing ideas with a whiteboard or paper. A minor factor is that the office usually has really nice chairs and monitors, but getting a nice home office setup is not too big of a hassle or financial commitment. |
My wife and I were in Costa Rica last month for two weeks. My wife is a manufacturing engineer and worked remotely for that time. (Since returning she has been working from home as has every office worker in her company)
Her project manager lives in a different US state and works remotely. They have a design engineer on her team that works remotely. My last 3 companies have Indian tech centers with hundreds of design engineers that work remotely. My last company sent 2D and 3D modeling to a guy that worked from home in another state. (But his business was declining because the Indians worked for 1/2 the price) Recently I sat next to a man flying back to Portland that has been travelling by motorcycle for years through South American and now SE Asia. He is a certified accountant and does company's books remotely. My HR rep lives on the East Coast but manages a team on the West Coast. |
Here's my setup:

Interesting stuff. Thanks guys.

I am in the Costa Rican Air Force.
That three-monitor setup looks pretty nice. My 43" TV barely fit on my desk. Two 24" screens would have been a bit too wide, but I didn't think about having them on the same stand, although I doubt there would have been enough angle to make a difference. |
I'm not retired, but I've been between gigs for 15 years now.
I've been 95% socially isolated for that time. Whittling away at that last 5%. OP, how's that electric motorcycle coming along? |
I'm doing IT support services for security and surveillance systems. Most of them I've installed as well, but installations are for the most part on hold.
