Hey, that's the TVC concept we did simulations of back in the late 80s! Pretty cool, that!

I bet a tilt-rotor could go faster, but that's not quite a helicopter I guess. ;)

Isn't that technically a gyrocopter?

...nope, the gyrocopter has non-powered rotor blades, those on the X2 are powered.

" Bringing her up to mach 1 String "
Anyone remember that from Airwolf ?
Also, they somehow managed to get that thing to loop upside-down.

I've wondered in the past what the aerodynamic flow looks like around a helicopter.
When in level flight, I'm assuming that the blades create a corkscrew pattern behind the helicopter.

you can fly a Gazelle inverted :) that why we fly 'em .... aswell as the semi-factory spec apache's from you guys!

Semi off topic, but has anyone ever seen the Red Bull aerobatic helicopter?

Yes! it was rather impressive to see fly, it was almost like it was on a set of strings being tugged around, flying in any direction on a whim, sideways, upside down! it made my day.

how about a radio controlled version?

Hello...

Thanks for sharing about X2 all the information.
It seems really good to share that type of informatic stuff for all of us...

Although not a traditional helicopter, a V22 Osprey is faster at 274kts vs the X2s 250 in level flight and 260 in a shallow dive.

...well, in a hover, the Osprey actually *is* a true helocopter (ha,ha).

...what amazes me is that they can "fold" those huge rotors and yet not have them come apart when operating!

Formula413 07-28-2011 04:23 PM

Love Ospreys, I saw one parked at an airshow but have yet to see one fly.

Are they not under used by US Army ? Even i think so that helicopter is not available for civil use.Can you please correct me about this ?

gone-ot 08-04-2011 10:14 AM

...U.S.Marine Corp only at the moment.

...they did some flight testing near here and had one crash 8-Apr'00 at a local airfield killing all 19 on-board. The plane was stationed at MCAS Yuma, AZ.

...thanks, I *didn't* know the USAF had "bought into" the program. It has had a l-o-n-g and controversial development, marred by many, many accidents and problems.

...one Marine detachment is at MCAS Yuma, AZ, (our hometown) and that crash happened at the Marana, AZ, airport just up/across I-10 highway from our house.

...there was a lot of "hate & discontent" expressed by helo pilots who didn't want anything to do with the MV-22 "Osprey," because of it's litany of problems.

USMC fielded in 2000
USAF fielded in 2009

TheEnemy 08-04-2011 02:28 PM

The Air Force used to use the local air strip for training on the Ospreys, they would fly over my house on their way back. Strange sounding bird, cross between a helecopter twump and a prop planes buzz.

After trying to fly one on a flight simulator I have I fully understand why there were a lot of crashes.
