Post up if you're below the EPA standards

Our Lincon town car is below EPA for a few reasons.
#1 Its cold here. #2 I don't drive it 90% of its miles. #3 It gets driven almost exclusivly in stop and go traffic and it is used as a taxi cab and courier. #4 Its not ecomodded, its 100% OE, cant even put new oxygen sensors because the old ones are rusted in place. |
The Worst EcoModders on the site
I'm not in that group, but I'll post anyway.
I've only been able to get .02 MPG under EPA HIGHWAY estimate ONCE with my Mustang since I bought it, and that was over a year before I found ecomodder.com. My morning commute has 21 stop lights over 16.5 miles. I must be doing something wrong. :D http://ecomodder.com/forum/fe-graphs/graph2691.gif |
My new vx is horrible. Don't even want to know like 30. Need 02 on order.
|
I'm getting a little over the EPA rating for my Bravada but in the grand scheme of things considering the size of my vehicle my driving habits and so fourth it is still only averages in the high 17s which is just sad. My ultimate planned eco mod is going to be just flat out buying a different car, hopefully sometime early next year. Still in the mean time I am going to keep doing what I can with this one.

I'm at EPA highway estimate average, but most owners of my car (who don't give a **** about fuel economy at all) are doing better. My first 2 tanks were below EPA 24mpg.
My driving is split between 30-40 mile trips (in heavy traffic, thanks a lot Bay Area) and <1 mile trips with so many stops I couldn't keep track even if I wanted to, so I suppose I'm doing okay compared to the EPA city estimate of 21mpg...which is impossible to get unless you never shift out of 2nd gear. When I logged my extremely short trips I noticed that the average was about 22mpg thanks to cold engine and high idle, but on longer trips I get about 30-35 depending on how the traffic is. Getting 40 is not hard if I stick to 45mph and under roads, but usually that's not where I'm driving. My postcat O2 sensor is dead, and the fuel trim sensors are on their way out, which doesn't help. |

If you can move one of the near death pre-converter sensor to the post converter position or if your post converter sensor is different snag one from a junk yard. |
Other than tires and presure, I have one mod between 5 cars, 1/5 of a mod/car. A think I might be the worst modder.
|
some people just don't have a "MPG friendly" route...when i used to live 2.5 miles from work i was getting terrible mileage because the engine was always cold and i had 8 stop's withing those 2.5 miles...now i get much better MPG but waste almost twice the fuel because it's a longer drive.

In the winter my drive was so short I had to charge the batteries on the suburban with a battery charger because they would go dead after a couple weeks from not fully charging in the cold due to the very short drive to and from work. Over 9 years I figure I saved up to 2000 hours of drive time cut fuel use by around 70%. |
ive never got over EPA in my F truck, as its so old im not 100% sure that the EPA i have is the right one, and im running it on LPG which is known to be worse MPG than gasoline, but much cheaper overall
im doing lots better than i was when i got it though :) |
Same here! doing a lot better then I used to. Still below EPA, I thought I was doing good until I converted to metric gallons :o I need to do a tuneup pretty bad I think? I know at the very least my thermostat is stuck open...
|
EPA didn't test cars before 1984 so yeah, the estimates will be off. I divide 300 (the normal range for a car) by the tank size in gallons to figure out the manufacturer's approximate MPG estimate.
My 1965 truck has a ~20 gallon tank, so that would peg it at ~15mpg, which is correct. My Rabbit has a 10.5 gallon tank which would put it at ~29mpg, about right on 87 octane. |
I had a ford f250 extended body with the straight 8 in it, got 9mpg no matter how I drove.
I had a supercharged tacoma with the v6, 18mpg no matter what. 16 mpg towing. |
What year F-250 had a straight 8? I'm not aware of Ford ever making a straight 8.
|
Confirmed: Wikepedia says:
"Ford never adopted the straight-8, using V8 engines in their entry-level cars and V8 or V12 engines in their Lincoln luxury cars from the 1930s on." However, I googled "Ford straight 8" and found this: How About A Straight-Eight-Powered Ford Tempo? T-Drive! Admittedly not a production engine but interesting anyway. |

Download Fuel Economy Data This a reply I got on another site in regards to my '81 Datsun ratings from there. "An approximate conversion... 22.5mpg CAFE=17mpg 2008 estimates, 20.5mpg CAFE=15mpg 2008 estimates, and 26mpg CAFE=19mpg 2008 estimates. So I guess using the 2008 estimates, your car is rated at 15mpg city, 19mpg hwy and 17mpg combined. " Is this conversion (old ratings multiplied by 0.75) reasonable? Sven7, your method gives a result of 14mpg for my Datsun, 20% lower than the 17mpg above.:D |
When I'm driving in the city it's a 1.5 mile drive (or less) and usually has about 15 stop lights. I'm pretty happy when I can manage 25 mpg doing this although I'm usually closer to about 22. It doesn't help with it being colder and it really doesn't help that this town is built on a hill so I'm either fighting to go up hill or coasting too fast.
|
I'm just wondering why to get into the car to drive 2 miles or less? I live about 2 miles from train station, and my work is another 2 miles from train station in Warsaw (20 miles on a train). And it's less than 10 minutes to get to the train station or to work with a bicycle or 20 minutes on foot. If we're talking of 2 miles trip with 15 stop lights, I'm sure I would go faster with a bicycle. And I'm passing many of my neighbours in their shiny cars, with my crappy bicycle on the way to the train station, even if there are just two stop lights on the way. Faster, healthier and definitely more FE friendly :)
Just a thought ;-) |

Mah ice cream needs to be transported home faster than walking would allow lol. |
Beats me the year, I bought it from a mechanic when I got my license some time ago. It was white and had a drivers side air bag, no drls. 4 speed automatic. The engine filled the bay under the hood. It seemed to top out at low revs, it hauled, but 9mpg no matter what I did, even inflating the tires to 80 psi.

I am not sure my car could get below EPA anymore.
there would have to be lots of idling, stop and start traffic and city driving. last week I had a relative drive my car for about 100 miles. that person did 75 MPH on the freeway with cruse and pulled 42.1 MPG. EPA 31 highway. to pull epa on the freeway would likely require speeds around 95-100 MPH :D unless I get to the salt flats I will never know. |
My fully modded Insight is another story. In the city I average 29 with all eco mods, but the phev kit. On the highway 44. This is in sport mode keeping with traffic, auto stop disabled and heavy use of ac or heater.

Next to last place - Woo-hoo!!!
I have a new claim to fame!!! Just checked the "% over EPA" list this morning, and the White Gnat, with a 24.91 MPG first fill-up is SECOND TO LAST ON THE LIST!!! Number 440 out of 441 with 28.8286% BELOW EPA.
Of course, I'm not sure how long that honor will last - it had two "dead" cylinders with ZERO compression, and when the head was removed, there were 2 cracked exhaust valves. The head's at the machine shop now, so I may never be able to repeat that amazing feat of less than 25 MPG in a 5-speed manual Suzuki Swift!!! |
I Do myself no favours!
Always large engined (2.0+) always Petrol, and always RWD Straight 6's.. I can't help it, I like to DRIVE! Current daily is the 326i- current mods, Tyres at 42psi and front lowered. It could use a cover under the engine, the roof rails off and some other trick pieces, however it's never Idle long enough for me to work on it. Car has LPG conversion- an old skool single point one- not exactly uber efficient..and you use circa 205% more LPG than petrol due to lower calorific value/litre. I've had vapourisor leaks (19mpg!!) and all sorts, but finally got it running ok. Most of the LPG tanks are at, or about EPA figures..so I count that as being 20% up! The petrol tanks are easy to exceed the EPA http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...iFuelgraph.jpg |
Guys, only when cheating at golf is the lower number better.
If I had the swift gt that would be my best mpg. Shame I traded the tacoma for the insight, it got 18 mpg unloaded, 16 fully loaded, although I didnt think this was a contest. Quote:

I would think the worst would be the one who has the most travel expense per year. After all that is a measure of being earth friendly. Just because you get 50 mpg doesn't mean much if you drive 50,000 miles a year.
|
My Mustang was pretty bad. I only got 16 MPG on the highway and <12 MPG in town. But I drove it less than 150 miles a month. :D Now that I live on campus I bike everywhere, so I sold it. I can still borrow my mom's SUV if needed.
For those rare long trips I can rent a car at weekend rates. It's about the same price to go 100 miles and uses far less fuel. |
Quote:
As far as "travel expense" - I'm guessing a person could buy a brand new, top of the line hybrid & put only high-priced "premium" fuel in it and have higher travel expense - even at 50+ MPG - than someone who gets a used "subcompact" like a Metro & drives it the same miles at 45+/- MPG, but always puts the cheapest "regular" grade fuel in it. So again, I think it depends on the criteria; "earth friendly" (whatever that is), "most miles per gallon average", "highest percentage over EPA", "least out-of-pocket cost per year for travel" (a home-bound or bed-ridden person probably wins that one)....... |
