Would this motor be appropriate?
Hi all,
Apologies for making my first post on this forum as boring as this is, but I need some advice. I've just stumbled across these two motors on eBay UK and I was wondering whether they'd be appropriate for an electric motorcycle conversion. I'm planning on converting a small 125cc to electric, so I'm thinking the kerb weight won't be massively high to start with, will 1000W do? hxxp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electric-E-scooter-48-volt-1000-watt-Motor-/390275370924?pt=UK_Sporting_Goods_Scooters_LE&hash =item5ade398fac#ht_500wt_998 hxxp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Electric-Scooter-48-volt-1000-watt-MOTOR-Electricscoote-/170577607533?pt=UK_Sporting_Goods_Scooters_LE&hash =item27b737bb6d#ht_3055wt_981 Cheers for any advice you can give. plainnash |
Hi there,
Sorry for you having to wait so long w/o a reply. 1000 watts is only about 1-1/3 HP and won't do much for you. You should think about your goals (max speed, range, budget are important) than post back. 30 mph top speed for 3 miles will demand a different propulsion package than 60 mph for 30 miles. It's a lot of fun though! Enjoy yourself. |
Whoa, it slipped by me too. I don`t know much at all about electric bikes, but I believe endless sphere is pretty much the go-to place for the kind of info you`re looking for. Have you checked out that forum?

Cheers for the replies.
I've since realised that 1000W is hugely underpowered for what I need, so I'll be using a big 7KW motor from HobbyKing and a few lawnmower batteries to power it. I'll keep you updated on here, it may be some time before I start this though, funds are low at the moment. |
Sounds good. As a point of reference, "typical" motorcycle conversions use 100-150 watt-hours/mile ex. a 2kwh pack can theoretically provide 15-20 miles range while totally depleting the batteries, so realistic range is less than this. You can get a lot of the conceptual design done on paper before you actually build anything.
+1 about endless sphere. There's also elmoto.net |
