Is it possible to avg. 30 mpg out of the new grand cherokees?

I want to purchase a new grand cherokee, but I wonder if its even possible to consistently achieve 30 mpg by practicing hypermiling tips and mods?

Don't think so

I've got an '06 Dakota Quad cab--relatively same size and shape. It has a 3.7L, and auto trans. I've added warmair induction, a full bed cover, front air dam, and I use some hypermiling techniques. I've never gotten to 25 mpg in real driving. Now, if you can drive only down hill, drafting a semi, in a warm dry climate......maybe.

Drivetrain in the new GC's are quite a bit different from an 06 Dakota though.

Posssible? I guess so, but it's gonna take a ton of work. I've managed to average over 30 mpg in my diesel pickup, which weighs more than a Grand Cherokee, and, my guess would be also has a higher drag coefficient. However, I doubt you can get the engine efficiencies I can get with my diesel. I can also tell you that it's taking lots of pretty intense hypermilling (with a manual tranny) to get over 30 mpg.

I also see you're getting 22 mpg with you current Grand Cherokee. Is there something about a new Grand Cherokee that you think will take you from 22 to over 30?

Its going to take a lot of money and work to get to 30mpg but you might be able to do it. You will never know unless you try.

It's going to come down to gearing. Change uot the rear end gear. Lower your rpm at cruise.
It's a brick, your not going to increase the mpg with aero tricks.

4x4 or 2wd. I say maybe. My 4x4 v6 got really good mileage on the flat. The transmission is geared funny 5 speed auto with 2 overdrives. 1st will take u to 53 mph at 6500 rpm and 2 me will do 83 mph.
By 1600rpm it make 90% of it max torque It's not a peaky engine.

At around 60 mph I can get 25-26mpg here in the mountains then my wife drives it all city and the average drops. She's heavy footed. And 90% is all city/ town mileage

As for gearing 70 mph is about 2k rpm. If u get 4x4 get qt1. If u don't need 4 low.

I had the evic read close to 28mpg leaving wv at 650ft up to 3500 ft and back down. From Logan wv to myrtle beach sc. Got stopped for a long time in bumper to bumper beach traffic. Over two hours. Then a day in stop n got and got almost 26 mpg (hand calculated) on that tank.

Base larado has 245 70r17 . My x has 265 60 r 18 The 20's have 275

A drag coefficient of .37
U could prolly do a partial grill block and under tray since it all independent.

My question is: Why? Does the Grand Cherokee fill some need that a more efficient vehicle could not? Off roading? Towing?

I'd rather have one of the many Hybrid SUV options and drive it like a normal person than a Grand Cherokee I need to baby and stress about Hypermiling to achieve the same economy.

Not trying to discourage you, just trying to follow your logic.

My wife thought it was pretty lol.

Gets better mpg than the 4.0 auto Tacoma 4x4 we traded for it.

I don't baby it.

My question is also why?

By buying a new vehicle you will be losing more money since they drop so much in the first year or two. Even if you get 8mpg more than now, which will be unlikely, you will spend more in payments.
